What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Grateful Dead - Fallout From the Phil Zone

Posted on: 07 March 2008 by Tam

Came across this the other day when I was picking up another CD. It's a 3 disc set of Brahms' piano, violin and double concertos. What drew me to it was Carlo Maria Giulini's presence (whose Brahms recordings are absurdly hard to come by given he recorded at least two complete cycles of the symphonies and probably at least each one 4 times in total). The box gives little away, but I was pleased to learn on getting it home that Giulini is conducting the piano concertos with Arrau along with the Tragic Overture and the Variations on a Theme by Haydn (all with the Philharmonia - so come on, EMI, where is the symphony cycle!). The violin concerto comes from Oistrakh with the Orchestra de la Radiodiffusion Francaise under Klemperer (interestingly they have chosen not to go for the Perlman/Giulini/Chicago recording) and for the double concerto he is joined by Fournier on cello, this time with the Philharmonia under Galliera (of whom I've not heard before).

Only listened to the first piano concerto and the Tragic Overture so far, but both are very fine.

regards, Tam

Unspectecular - that is what I'd call Julia Fischer's interpretation. Nevertheless you hear that she "grew up" with the partitas. I like her playing them a lot.

Stefan, as usual you nail it dead on. But I would add the clarification that "unspectacular," in my view, can also be interpreted as a "positive" or a good thing. It's true, Julia Fischer's recording is very intimate, reflective and melancholy; its sound is less rhythmic or showy and aims toward beauty or contemplation. Whereas Grumiaux is more the extrovert, Fischer is the introvert. Fischer is more about taking the time to go on a long walk in the forest, by yourself or as I did the other day, watch big, wet snowflakes slowly fall and make everything white again. Sometimes, it makes a nice contrast to the other alternatives but don't choose this one when you are chasing about or motoring down the autobahn at 200km/hr.

Stefan, having said that, I will be providing my mailing address to you under a separate e-mail so that you can send me your signed copy from Julia as soon as possible; don't delay! Big Grin

Well said, Doug Winker waiting for the "separate" address...

cheers
Stefan

I agree, you can never have enough King Crimson.. I have 9 copies of "In the Court of the Crimson King" on vinyl. I know I'm sick, I can't help it.

Way back, I used to define myself by being a KC fan (yes...), having all their LP's and all. Is the Great Deceiver any good ?

cheers

Hi Stefan,

Only a quick play through on both CD's and good so far. The gigs are from 1974 (Providence, Rhode Island) and 1973 (Glasgow Appolo, Oct 23) Check here for Track listings. Never mind Level 5, Robert's hitting 11 at times. More enjoyment ahead with each listen I think. Oh and the Mellotron Big Grin Cool Big Grin

Haim - this CD has been very popular in France and was released today in Oz so I thought I would give it a try.
