Paul Newman passes on

Paul Newman died Friday at the age of 83. Not a fanatic follower of his, but I always thought he was a class individual, be it movies, racing, or his charitable commercial products lines.

A real star, a marvelous, charismatic actor and a genuinely good guy by the sounds of it. Very sad to hear the news.

As said,a real star and by all accounts a gentleman.
A friend was working in the news room in Miami where he was filming Absence of Malice after the 4 days of filming where our friend had walk on parts etc she went to get an autograph he thanked her using her first name without her even realising she had been noticed, many others had the same treatment.

A great star and always a real person who had the presence of mind not to live in Hollywood.

It's 'Cool Hand Luke' for me. I saw it in the cinema in my early teens and was completely blown away.

I'll always remember his bicycle riding scene,
romantically performed to the tune of...

Raindrops are falling on my head
I'm just like a guy whose feet are too big for his bed
Nothin seems to fit
Those raindrops are falling on my head, they keep falling

So I just did me some talking to the sun
And I said I didnt like the way he got things done
Sleeping on the job
Those raindrops are falling on my head, they keep falling

But theres one thi-i-ing I know
The blues they send to meet me wont defeat me
It wont be long till happiness steps up to gree-ee-eet me

'Cau-au-ause raindrops keep falling on my head
Hahh, but that doesnt mean my eyes will soon be turning red
Cryins not for me
Cause Im never gonna stop the rain by complaining
Because Im free-ee-ee-ee-ee
Nothings worrying me-ee-ee

Raindrops keep falling on my head
Hahh, but that doesnt mean my eyes will soon be turning red
Cryins not for me
Cause Im never gonna stop the rain by complaining
Because Im free-ee-ee-ee-ee-ee
Nothins worrying me-ee-ee

Friends

For many years I used to see Mr. Newman at CART and CHAMP car races at Laguna Seca. He'd speed from pit to hospitality coach and back on a small scooter. If you waved, he would look right at you and smile back with a nod. In the hospitality area he never sat with his back to you. He was obviously aware that folks were curious and he would always sit facing front. I never saw him turn away from someone with a camera. He would sign autographs and say hi but because of his openess and because he was a real racing nut, his personal space always seemed to be respected. He was much much more than a great actor, he was a fine and decent human being.

David Letterman gave a beautiful tribute to Newman tonight, complete with old clips. He went on about him for several minutes, sincerely and with deep emotion. The gist of it all was that in addition to being a very fine actor, a really good race car driver, his charitable work was monumental ... he was someone who singlehandedly improved the world.

All best,
Fred

around '80 I had dinner with friends, one's sister worked in TV/film and was in a meeting with a bunch of people niggling over tedious stuff. He had sunglasses on at the far end of the table, and listening but bored, at one point he looked at her and dropped one side of the glasses and that blue eye winked, nearly knocked her off her seat. LOL

He clearly knew what he had and enjoyed people getting wowed. Amazing career and life.
