How To Tell A Naim Mains Lead???
Posted by: bblesley on 31 May 2005
Hi All,
Over the years all my mains leads have been mixed up - anyone give me any hints as to the lettering or any other identifiers on the actual Naim supplied ones.
Just about to sell some older gear and would hate to give away the Naim ones!
Best Wishes.

BB,
The only thing which MAY indicate that it's a Naim lead would be that naim only use Crabtree plugs (This is true for the UK, not sure about the rest of the world).
Hope this helps.

Sometimes they have a plastic label on them (can't remember what it says other than naim audio). Other than that I don't know.

Welcome BB,
Mine says "Naim Power Chord" on it

Just plug your mains leads into your Naim gear in turn. The Naim leads will sound so much better that identification will be easy.

All mine have DESCO GRUPO PIRELLI and a year eg 1999 down the length every 30 cms or so.

Ask kuma to take one of his gorgeous pics of his naim mains cable. I'm sure he'll oblige
Posted on: 01 June 2005 by bblesley
Hi Kota,
How would I do that?

He's always around and I'm sure he will notice this thread. If not, just open another one titled "Paging kuma" or something similar and ask politely
In the meantime do a search here in the forum for his pics and see what I'm on about.

All this has me wondering whether I got Naim mains leads with my CD5x and Nait 5i. It doesn't look like it to me; just a non-descript black cord with 'Cheng-ching' or something equally uninformative on it. Best look into that with my dealer...Caveat emptor, and all that.

Hi,
I've found 2 with the above inscription on the lead and 1 has an attachment (shiny paper) that says Naim Audio!
Thanks everyone.
BB
PS panderson - from today's new found experience you haven't got naim leads!

Panderso,
Your Ching-Cheng cables are the current original Naim ones in North America.

Didn't they used to be Volex? --Eric

They still use 'Volex' ends but the lead itself seems to be different from the past.
The current one seems to be 'Ching-Chang'. I have few around that have a different Chinese names. ( Baohing is one and another one.. I just can't recall now but starts with a letter 'T' )
Pedro,
Thanks for your kind words on my pix.
I need a decent camera now since my Coolpix is dying on me!

Don't worry.
The new ones sound better.

I have requested Naim to consider the possibility of unambiguously labelling or marking the mains cables.
Up to now there has been no response.
Considering their insistence that only genuine Naim cables should be used with Naim equipment, such marking would mean one less thing to worry about.
Cheers Robert
p.s. Why not make the Mains cable captive?

A good question.
Although few reviewers will be dissapointed since they can't use their favourite Nordost.

Hi All,
Am I allowed to question the fact that you should only use Naim mains cables but Naim themselves appear to use many different cables already from Pirelli ( I guess Italian) to Ching Cheng (Surely Chinese).
They MUST be sonically different!!!
A suspicious BB.

Its time to get a grip people. Its a mains lead, naim no doubt sourced a reasonable cost power lead which they could get as much of as needed.
I would put a guess with plug at around £1 a piece, its time to put the voodoo bull shit behind you.
Its a Power Leeeeadd *
* Said in an Frank Zappa kinda way.

Naim mains leads are the correct ones for the purpose, that is, powering Naim gear.*
*Said in a Naim Instruction Manual kinda way.

Hi
I'm with garyi on this one, I cannot see why 2 leads with the same spec should make any sonic difference, time for a blind listening panel to form, lets have the truth, don't ask me too busy, playing with crocs

Well, I just stopped by my recently appointed Naim dealer to find the doors locked and the business closed. So; no light will be shed from that source. Perils of a small market.
This thread leaves me thoroughly unconvinced that 'Naim leads' and cables should be assumed, as an article of faith, to be the optimum. That is no knock against the electronics, which I greatly admire.

Ching Cheng
Nothing special there as far as I can see.
and somewhere in there
I am not convinced that the naim cable is that special. I would suggest that what's behind the otherside of the wall is MUCH more significant then the short run of cable from socket to equipment.
Long may the debate continue, no ones mentioned the f work yet

Hi
HT, yes my speaker cable does cost a few £ per mtr, its naca5, I could spend £1000s on interconnects, I don't, just for the record I have tested other power cables, YES, and by accident, I only found out 2 years later they where non Naim, and I could HONESTLY tell no difference, if any one has noticed a difference please tell us all, my hearing is not up to the job, better go get me a flak jacket.
Cheers Gary B.
