When CDP is "round" meridian 588 with nait2/kan

Posted by: masaccio on 06 January 2003

Hello,

I'm just changed CDP from naim CD3 to meridian588 for nait2/kan mk1 system. New CDP should be a small size, then I got it.

The sound is,,, a little strange for me.
It is hard to describe,,, it seems just sound, not music.

What I feel is the conflict of flat-earth system with round earth source? I want your opinion. In general, what happens CDP is "rounded?"
If you know about meridian588 sound with flat-earth system, please show me your impression.

thanks,

MK

When getting a demo of some speakers earlier this year the dealer also kindly let me hear a few different CDPs. As far as I remember the 588 was one of these players and I found it very detailed yet 'bland' in the extreme. I felt that the underlying design concept must have been to make listening easy but it did not to my ears provide 'reality'. Very different from the presentation from a Naim CDP. Perhaps there was something wrong with the player I heard!!

Thanks all.

>Did you listen to the 588 in your system before purchasing ?

Yes, Idid. When I demoed CD players(meridian588, LINN cd12, naim cd3), 588 was the best at that time. It was clear, detailed, bright, and smooth. (CD12 was not so bad, but has NO music and crazy price...) Then I was captured.

2 weeks later, I saw something missing.

I described before that 588 sound is just sound not music. It means for a little light of base sound. Lacking base rhythm... THis is what I saw in meridian with nait/kan system. I will try 588 with aktive LINN isobarik system.

Thanks for your opinions.

I have a Meridian 206B..it is a little polite, but that's her character..I reckon they blend well together, ie not to aggressive..Cheers
