How do I superimpose a portion of one image (photo) over another image/background ( again photo)?
I'm titting around now and it's all guesswork which isn't working out at all........
Hope you can help.

Depends what you want to achieve but most of it can be done through the layer palette.

1. Open your background image.
2. Open your top image.
3. Use the pointer tool (top right) to drag the top image onto the background image.
4. This will create two layers and depending on the resolution of the images you probably won't see the back ground one.
5. In the layers palette you will be 'in' the second image, you will see a pop up box saying normal, click this and you will see a number of choices, go through them to see if you get the effect you want.

If what you want to achieve is for instance a better sky as a background then all you want is a mask.

Follow the first three steps above.
Now in the top image on the layer click the little square button with black dot in at the bottom of the layers pallete, this will create a layer mask. Now using the paint brush you can paint out the parts of the image you don't want using black and paint in using white, or any shade in between to give you varying degrees of transperency.

Thanks Gary. I managed it somehow. A combination of persevering with my earlier methods plus a little luck!
