Just got it today, really good - traditional Eels themes, suicide, car/plane crashes etc but not pushed at you and very fine jolly tunes. Only listened to CD1 of 2 so far. Not sure how I'd compare to Shootenany yet. Different but if you like one you'd like the other.

The new album seems a tentative return to form. It seemed E was losing interest on the last couple of records (or maybe it was me), Shootenanny really didn’t hold my attention save a couple of tracks.

Blinking Lights is much more in the traditional Eels territory of jolly tunes with horrid themes. If it was condensed down to a single record from the sprawl that it is, it’d be a winner - 33 tracks of “life is shit” can have you reaching for the gin bottle. Notwithstanding that, it’s beautifully recorded and worth buying. Got my copy through CD Jungle £7.99 delivered.

Eels are another (essentially one-man) band that suffered from arriving with a near perfect debut album – a bit like Garbage or Alanis Morrissette to name a couple.
