Stevie Ray Vaughan - Live Al***s

Anyone care to give me a recommendation, there seems to be a fair choice.

Thanks.

Steve.

Live at the Carnegie Hall is OK. None of them are as good as the studio albums but sometimes you've got to have more

Steve

Personally I am not a big fan of Live Alive - for me it does not catch the true essence of the sound of SRV's guitar which I am lucky enough to have heard twice in the flesh.

Whilst not a live album, rather a compliation with some live tracks on it 'Blues at sunrise' has a great live recording of Texas Flood and others. I think this is taken from one of his DVDs. You can usually get this for about £5 and I highly recommend it.

I have not heard the others so I would be interested to see what other people think.

Cheers

I would say that Live Alive is similar in quality to Live at The Carnegie Hall. Live at the Carnegie also has the Roomful of Blues horn section and a female singer who's name I can't remember, so it's a little more varied. They've also re-issued the studio albums on CD with 5 or 6 additional live tracks. They're not bad but they don't add anything to the studio recordings.

Thoroughly recommend "In the Beginning". It's raw but his talent shines through.

Cheers

I'm in slight disbelief here- I cant believe that no one has mentioned SRVs two standout performances:

Live in montreux- 1982 & 1985

Live in Japan

both available on CD, and I think montreux is on DVD too- both sh1t hot performances- SRV was better live than on record..... an that is saying something!

In 2000 a 3CD+DVD package called simply SRV was released which contains many live recordings not available on other releases (at least at that time). Some of the radio feeds from the Austin clubs are spine chilling in particular "Don't Lose Your Cool". You get the real live tube/valve sound loud & clear. I too was lucky enough to see SRV a couple of times (Hammersmith's Palais in 86 and the Odeon in 88) and this is the closest I've heard to the live performance sound although "In the Beginning" comes a close second. For me the Montreaux releases & Live Alive are a little too "clean" - similar to the Austin City Limits releases.

"Live at the El Mocambo" is awesome but never released as a CD (VCR & DVD only as far as I know).

Cheers

Thanks everyone, I shall be picking up a couple of these.

I've also noticed "In Session" with the great Albert King, I think I'll try that too. I see it is available on hybrid SACD is that worth the extra for a non SACD CDP, anyone got that?

I've got it on Vinyl. It's not bad. He's also on a Lonnie Mack album and a Johnny Copeland album. I'll have to dig them out because I can't remember the names although I can visualise the covers, just can't read the titles. Memory can be a weird thing.
I have an old VCR live release from the Rockpalast in germany - I thought it a bit ho hum. NPR radio in the states sells a very good live DVD.
I used to have a friend from Texas who saw SRV play live every week for years. He actually got to the point of avoiding places because Stevie was playing and he wanted a change. Still can't get my head round that one.

The Lonnie Mack album - Strike Like Lightning - is excellent; the Johnny Copeland album is Honky Tonkin' - never heard it, unfortunately.

Had 'In the beginning' waiting for me on the doormat when I arrived home last night.

Only had a couple of listens but it sounds fantastic. A much more authentic rendition of SRV live.

A great stripped down sound, loads of attack bursting through in Stevie's guitar playing.

A great recommendation from Howard that I thoroughly endorse.

All for £5 from Amazon Marketplace - what a bargin.

Cheers

Just to report that I did try this and it's a "must" for SRV and King fans together with anyone who enjoys good blues playing.

Thanks for the recommendations, "The Sky is Crying" has also proved to be a great addition.

Hi Munch,

I haven't bothered with many music DVDs - I find DTS 5.1 impressive but not natural, so I stick with the main rig for music.

Steve.
