He has to be my favorite drummer of all time, and I'd like to get more stuff with him on it, but I just don't know what is good and what is...you know...a drummers album.
I have all the return To Forever stuff along with the Miles stuff and a bit of Marcus Miller, but does anyone know of some outstanding albums that I may have missed?
I'd be grateful.

I only have Venusian Summer - the first one (I believe).

It's very good - a mixture of some funky stuff and spacey. Definitely not a drummer's album and stands up well against the other solo RTF stuff at the time, though not as good as core RTF albums, which for me are Where Have I Known You Before, No Mystery and Romantic Warrior. I didn't hold with all the singing and blah that went on afterwards.

I re-bought it recently on CD and after a brief moment adjusting my ears to mid-70s fusion all was just as it was.

I have this CD which IMHO is rather good. It includes a cool version of Led Zep's Kashmir!

Actually Rasher, if you do a search on http://www.cduniverse.com/ it has an 'Appears on' listing after his solo stuff. Some of these are star rated with sound clips so it may help you make a choice.

He has been the drummer on many fine recordings. Red Clay by Freddie Hubbard is one of my favorites. Also, if you look him up on the All Music Guide website, you can see all of his recordings, both lead and as a contributor. Here is the website

His musical styles have varied across the years. After Return to Forever and his earlier solo albums (Venusian Summer) in the 70's, he moved into more of a funk/R&B style. Across these styles I can recommend "Astral Pirates" (a cracking jazz fusion album co-produced by Al Kooper of all people), "Twennynine", which I think is only available on vinyl but epitomised early 80's funk and "Renderers of the Spirit", which brings him back into a jazzier mood.
