Classical concert venues Leeds/Manchester
Posted by: Bruce Woodhouse on 21 December 2007
Our New Year resolution is to go to a classical concert; and who knows maybe more than one! Neither of us are huge classical fans but our collection (of modern and early choral music especially) is growing and we fancy hearing some live.
Can anyone suggest a good venue in the frozen wastes up here where we should get a good performance? I can keep an eye out in the newspaper etc for forthcoming events but is there a good online resource to help me spot these things in advance?
We are more or less equidistant from Leeds and Manchester/Salford city centre.

Your first port of call should be the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester.

Seconded the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester. I attend monthly. It is a superb building with magnificent acoustics and easy parking right next door. I love it.

As has been said, the Bridgewater Hall is your first port of call. I haven't been there myself, but the excellent
Halle Orchestra is based there and I'd try one of their concerts.

I'm going to see Angela Hewitt performing Bach's Well Tempered Clavier in it's entirety (two concerts) at the Bridgewater in June. Can't wait!

Saw PJ Harvey do her solo show in the Bridgewater Hall. I can only confirm what others have said about its acoustics. Its also a really nice venue too with comfy seats and decent beer.
It was also the best show I've ever seen so maybe thats clouding my judgement......but I still think it was great. Large enough but able to still remain an intimate venue.

The Lowry theatre is also a very good venue.

When Loudon Wainwright played The Bridgewater he wandered on stage, took a long look round and announced "Hey, classy joint!"
Bruce you can sign up on The Bridgewater web site for advance notice of all future concerts. You can even book a specific seat.
