Yeehhaa i made it

Posted by: DAVOhorn on 24 August 2006

Dear All,

Just to let you know that i have made it to Sydney Australia, and am now living and working here.

I have found a HiFi club here and hope to go to a meeting this Sunday.

So hopefully can make some hifi buddies here .

Still looking for somewhere to live here in Sydney, it is proving hard and potentially expensive, but i need a home suitable for the HiFi !!!!

Such are the requirements for a hifi enthusiast.

I am looking in the RYDE area of Sydney as it will be convenient for work.

So it is good to be here and now working and earning a few dollars.

There are some decent HiFi shops here, but i have not found a NAIM dealer.

To my NAIM buddies in the UK, this is my first chance to let you know that i am ok.

Mike and Pam, John, Simon, George and Martin.

Congratulations on your move to Sydney. I am sure you will love living here - it is a fabulous place.

The Naim Dealer in Sydney is Harry York of Audio Genesis based in Darling Harbour. The address is Shop 4, 1 Murray Street, Pyrmont, NSW 2009. Telephone 9566 4621.

He is a great guy and true gent who is a pleasure to do business with.

There a few of us Naim fans around. If you want to meet up with some my email is expatinoz (at) hotmail (dot) com.

Welcome to Oz, David. You've come at a good time, we're just emerging from what passes as winter around here.

I seem to recall you were thinking about a move to South Africa at one stage. Still in the podiatry business?

I'm one of the Naim tragics mentioned by Adrian, although up the road a bit. A few of us manage to meet occasionally, maybe we can catch up.

Hi David,

welcome...good timing with The Ashes.

I lived in Sydney for ten years and it's a great place to live not so good for work unless you live close to it.

Also, make sure you buy a house/flat with air conditioning

can get a bit hot

Sydney's gain is our loss with your wonderful breadth of musical knowledge......soon some of the tracks you have introduced us all to here in Lowestoft will be resounding across Sydney Harbour!

All the best..hope to catch up with you again one day soon.

J.N. ..... decent hi-fi shops? Now whatever do you mean?

Dear Milan,

How are you going with housing?

Or do you benefit from a large company agreeing to pay the extortionate rentals?

I am having fun trying to find a nice simple house that is fit for habitation.

Also that is not more than a kings ransom.

I went to the Hifi club at Haberfield last night and met a good bunch of fellow saddo's.

I would think that this could be a good way to meet people.

They did a blind listening test on 5 cd players.

Linn CD 12
Cary
Audio Aero
Ayre
Sony

Worst was cheap sony followed by Linn then Ayre than audio aero then the favourite was the Cary but most definitely without up sampling.

One of the mebers builds his own valve amps and they were very pleasant . abit underpowered for the room and speakers used. The Reference 3A.

They meet at the last sunday at the Haberfield Library 3 pm - 6 pm.

worth a visit.

I hope to go again next month.

Hopefully have a hovel yo call my home too.

And my stuff from the uk should be here too.

David,

I am having to pay my own rent but have had company assistance with relocation. I used

http://www.domain.com.au/?mode=rent

and

http://www.realestate.com.au/cgi-bin/rsearch?a=bhp&t=ren

We also came over as a family in May and found the property we are in. The rental will vary greatly by suburb, generally the further west and away from the city or beaches the cheaper it gets. The rest is perseverance and a touch of luck.

You may not avoid the kings ransom. Sydney is Australia's equivalent to UK London prices!

Did you ship your kit by air freight then? Mine is somewhere at sea.

Regards

Lower vacancy rates mean good times for investors
Author: Michael Yardney
Date: June 28, 2006

The latest Real Estate Institute of Australia statistics show that rental vacancy rates have fallen in almost all capital cities as renters scramble for accommodation and force up rents.

These lower vacancy rates are due to a severe shortage of rental stock as new investors are currently avoiding the property markets as well as poor housing affordability forcing many would–be home purchasers to turn to the rental markets.

These dual forces have pushed up rentals. This finally delivers good news for landlords, some of whom have had to drop the rentals for their investment properties over the last few years to meet the market.

The figures show Melbourne had a vacancy rate of 1.8%. Leading independent property consultancy Metropole Property Management reports its lowest vacancy rates on record, with a queue of prospective tenants every time a property is open for inspection.

Vacancy rates fell in both Sydney and Brisbane by 0.6%; to 2% and 1.5% respectively.

David,

JN has just pointed me to this thread (haven't browsed the "cell" for a while). Glad to hear you're settling in. HiFi first, then think about digs later, eh?

Is the experience what you expected, so far?

cheers, Martin

David,

Just logged on after a few days of admin and other boring stuff. I'll give you a call during next week. I am based in St Ives so not too far away.

Dear all,

Thanks for that Milan.

The joys of finding rental accommodation:

Went to a viewing yesterday. 15 mins in the norm, with a queue of dedicated viewers.

I am 2nd in the queue.

The Korean family bag it stright away.

Damn and darnation.

It was large 3 bed with good lounge and diner .

$385.00 p/w.

Mind you the interior was a bit beat up and the pool was now a green pond. The bathroom was ummmmm YUK.

But probably one of the best houses i have seen . And in a great neighbourhood.

There is a smaller one round the corner but NO GARDEN>

Saw a nice house but you need a Full house Land Rover to get over the kerb and descend down into the drive and carport. My car could not navigate the drive so that one out too.

Looked at another not bad but shared plot so would have to get on very well with neighbour.

So off we go again today.

Next weekend is the time to make a decision and go for one.

I know act in haste repent at leisure. But my 20ft container arrives this week and 4 weeks it will clear customs and quarantine and then mine. So i do not want to put it into storage as this is expensive.

David,

You can also rent furniture till yours clears customs and quarantine. Do you really expect it to be 4 weeks? I'll have to ring my agent and ask for their view. My stuff is due to dock on the 19th!

What neighbourhoods are you looking at?

Milan
Posted on: 04 September 2006 by DAVOhorn
Dear Milan,

I am looking at Epping Carlingford as it is between Gordon and Liverpool so is more central for the drive to both places of work.

Hi David;

Is your Google e-mail account active?

What sort of car do you have?

E-mail us some pics, when you can.

I have sent an e-mail to your Google account, or you can find my e-mail address in my forum profile, if you need it.

Good luck with the accommodation.

Dear John ,

i do not as yet have access to e mail.

This is my only means of electronic communication.

How are things going?

Well.

Had a bad couple of days.

Got a bit of a bug.

So have not slept for 3 out of the past 4 nights.

So lying in my pit staring at the ceiling while not feeling well has caused me to question this adventure.

Have been very close to packing my bags.

Feel a bit better tonight.

Went to quack and had a blood test.

So see what the outcome of that is tomorrow.

Being this far from home and basically alone can be very daunting and Frightening.

Looking at more properties this weekend. Perhaps getting a proper home will help with my current feelings.

I could cut and run and stomach the expense.

But if i go in for a 6 month lease i will be stuck for 6 months.

But i may feel so much happier in a few weeks time.

Work is not the problem that seems to be going ok.

The car is good.

The HiFi club will be good.

So it is the adjustment to a new country that is causing some doubts.

Everybody who has done this say the same story.

So??????

see what the weekend brings.

David;

I guess the transition to the other side of the world, and adapting to a new culture was bound to be difficult? Sounds like your physical malady has made you understandably a bit negative.

I hope you're feeling better and more positive soon. I guess you ought to give it at least six months or a year?

Good luck mate.

John.

David,

John is right it can be an emotional roller coaster. Give it some time to settle down and then reappraise your situation. Most people I've spoken with say it can take up to two years to really settle! Some can do it in two months. Patience really helps!

David

I moved to Adelaide two years ago for work and I miss Sydney terribly. Hang in there, Sydney is wonderful once you get to know it, the food is terrific and the people are perfectly normal.

And something else: I heard that a new Naim dealership is about to start in the upper North Shore, very close to Gordon, in fact. Must be a good omen for you. Winker

Dear All,

The blood test was negative for Diabetes. Even though i was presenting most of the symptoms at the time i saw GP.

So the cause of my ills is STRESS.

The inability to deal with the situation and to change the causative agents.

So what to do.

I feel like going back to UK.

Is this the right thing to do???

**** knows.

If i stay financially i will be even further in the mire.

As will have to underrite the housing problem.

This will reduce my capital and may mean that buying a house will become doubtful here and UK.

If i bail now i can still afford to buy in UK.

The rental market for housing is the primary cause of my ills.

Along with up to 3 hours per day commute two days per week..

So !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can send my stuff back to uk and fly home for a reasonable cost .

Or incur major additional expense if i go in 6 months.

As i feel now i am not sure which way to jump.

NO NOT THE RAILWAY LINE as a poor sole did here in Sydney last week.

But when you are unwell and alone it is extremely frightening and disturbing.

I am feeling a bit better today but sleep still eludes me most nights. 3 nights sleep in last 7 days. So this is compounding my problems.

The doc said i may have to remove cause of stress.

I know i will have to buy a NAIM system and sell the valves.

Thanks for your concern.

Sorry about cancelling the meal Milan but work committments.

regards David
