What was the first concert you went to?

Mine was Blondie, January 1980. Debbie Harry was as drunk as a skunk. Still great though.
Regards,
Steve.

Bob Dylan and The Band, Sydney Stadium 1966.

Dylan must have been on something fairly special, he fell over but the bass player caught him before he toppled off the stage, which was a converted boxing ring in the middle of a large tin shed.

Levon Helm remains the loudest drummer I've heard.

New Orleans Philharmonic in May of 1965. The first trumpet played "The Carnival of Venice", and blew my socks off. That was my first exposure to classical music.

I can't remember, but it would have been something as part of Arthur Davison's children's concert series at the Fairfield Halls in Croydon.

The first proper concert, where I paid for the ticket, was The Stranglers at Guilford Civic Hall

Taken to various things with parents including Bill Haley and the Comets at the Rainbow in 79.

But first under my steam and a good start it was to my concert career - Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band June 4th 1980 Wembley Arena. Next up was Genesis then Simon and Garfunkel.

The Jam, 1980, Newcastle.

First real date. Older woman too, a nurse.

She was seventeen.

And gorgeous.

I was drooling and nervous,

The Jam; thunderously good indeed.

Then youth ran away and I found myself here.

Jethro Tull, June 1969 - Village Blues Club, Dagenham Roundhouse

Went with School mates to this life changing gig.

I had no idea a 'live' band could lure an audience into an energy transfer. The band were so 'tight', with Ian Anderson's powerful voice & one legged flute playing. MAGIC!

We saw an amazing selection of bands in this 300 capacity Bingo Hall from 1969-1975.

Biggest regret was not seeing King Crimson, deciding instead to study for 'O' Level exam failures Roll Eyes

Status Quo at Edinburgh Odeoen - May 1979 when they were still a rock band. I went along with a mate of mine after a cousin from London had visited us up in Scotland. Her boyfriend at the time was a roadie for someone (possibly Rory Gallagher, sorry can't remember that bit) and she managed to arrange tickets and backstage passes to the gig for us.

Anyway we arrived to be told there were no tickets waiting for us but miraculously there were 2 tickets left for sale. Oh the innocence of two 16 year olds. My mates ticket was on the end of row 3 and mine the end of row 1.

When the gig started (Caroline I think) there were gaps in the middle of the front row which I then moved into - so for my first gig I was watching my then heros leaning on centre stage.

To my cousin, now deceased, I say thank you for introducing me to live music in such an explosive fashion. I've seen loads of gigs since then but I still remember this fondly as being in the top 10.

Cheers
Scott

For me it was Camel playing The Snow Goose at Guildford civic hall sometime in the seventies.

Pink Floyd, 1977, Montreal Olympic Stadium.

A lot of smog in the air at the time...

Birmingham Town Hall 1968.

Moody Blues, Spencer Davis Group, Manfred Mann, Picadilly Line and one-man band Don Partridge.

Wonderful.

Yes, at the wonderful Glasgow Apollo circa 1976. Power cut meant the gig finished late and I got a rollicking from my Dad for being out late. Worth it though Big Grin

Twas at that bastion of all new music: the Chelmsford Corn Exchange in 1967 where I saw the Crazy World Of Arthur Brown; the week after I saw the Pink Floyd - it was very expensive 8 shillings and 6 pence, but it was OK my Dad paid

Found a picture of the ticket on the Net - no idea where my old ticket went wish I still had it.

The band Sky (Kevin Peek, John Williams, Herbie Flowers, Justin ?-must check the CD) back in a distant 1981 at the Apollo in Manchester.

Good to see you back on the forum. Hank Marvin is and will always be one of my all time favourite guitarists - he's a legend - I remember seeing the Edgar Broughton Band too and they played a stunning song called Apache Dropout which was a medley of the Shads Apache and Captain Beefheart's Dropout Bogie - sensational, shame about the rest of the set I remember deciding not to buy their elpee, but got Apache Dropout as a single.

I let you know about the adventures with an nDAC when I get back from my round trip Tomorrow Night - now there's a title for a great Vince Crane song - Vince was my hero at 11 and seeing CWOAB was something I'll never forget: doubt if Arthur remembers me.

A concert at Fairfield Halls whilst at school.
First pop/rock concert?

Probably a package tour, Lord Rockinghams XI and Searchers are the only 2 acts I can remember, LRXI were the only one of those 2 we could hear.

James : Francis Monkman , or Tristan Fry or Steve Gray ?

My first concert was Pulp, 1991? (those years are rather hazy for me) at the North London University student bar in Kentish Town, London. There was about 50 people there and it was a really great show, and the one thing I do remember is hearing and loving My Legendary Girlfriend.

Went with my cousin, Anita. I'd just bought Black Night as a 7" so would have been 1970

The Edgar Broughton band my god that brings back memories . I booked them for show once and the Manager aksed me what size was the stage and after I told him he said that he didn't want to know the size of the hall. He was shocked when I told him that was the stage size. He told me that was the biggest stage they ahd ever appeared on.

Apart from my brothers band numerous times my first gig was the Kinks in about '67. The same year I saw Cream and Pink Floyd within 12 days of each other. It was also the first year I saw The Who and later that year The Troggs amongst well known acts.

I'd seen Engelbert Humperdinck and Roy Orbison (not on the same bill) in the mid/late 60s but don't really count them as they were old style tours with half a dozen acts on the bill.

My first real concert was Deep Purple in March 1971 in Green's Playhouse Glasgow. It was completely astonishing and I still regard it as the best concert I ever saw. That was Friday night and then I saw the Stones on Monday. Quite a weekend. At the end of the Stones the crowd was actually shouting for Deep Purple. They made quite an impression.

First gig with my older brother was After the Fire, at a small venue in Sheffield (The Limit Club, I think):

Laser Love

First gig under my own steam was The Smiths at Kings College London, just before "This Charming Man" hit the charts. That concert was wild Smile

20 years previously, that was the student bar of North Western Poly where we had a few good bands, including East Of Eden and a memorable Bridget St. John concert where Al Stewart wandered up to the stage and asked if he could play along. She looked visibly awed. He asked her what key the next song was in to which she stuttered that she didn't know. He said, never mind I'll sort it out as you go...and played the most wonderful and sensitive accompaniment to her - never upstaging her.

First "concert" for me was SNFU opening for GBH in 1984...

Either Hawkwind at Clacton Town Hall in, maybe, 1970?, or Pink Fairies at Colchester Sheepen College at about the same time

My first 'proper' concert was Yes at the Usher Hall in Edinburgh in June 1975. An amazing experience that will always remain with me. Jon Anderson was amazing (as were they all).

Two possibilities: Sky at Middlesbrough Town Hall (c.f. James's post earlier in the thread - it might have even been the same tour), or UFO at Newcastle City Hall. We had great seats and for a young sixth former, just feeling the drums/bass reveberate in my chest was heaven!
