Rega P9 info

Posted by: smiglass on 15 April 2002

I am considering a Rega P9 with the new RB1000 tonearm and am wondering does anyone have experience with this TT. I have a P3 2000 which is a good TT but sounds thin compared to my old LP12/Ittock VII/Karma setup. What opinions are out there? I will be using a Van Den Hul MC-10 cartridge. My system is: CDX/XPS/102/Hi/250
Thanks,
Anthony

Hi smiglass:

I think that the forum contributors most likely to be able to help are (in no particular order) Frank Abela, Vuk Vuksanovic and Joe Petrik. If you don't get an asnwer from them on the forum, search for their posts to get their e-mail addresses and foist yourself on them.

Best Regards,
Mark Dunn

PS Rumour has it that the new P9 is rather rare in the US and Canada at the moment.

Have you considered a used P9 and get the arm OL or expressimo modified? You might see some good prices on a used P9 because of the new one. I did the OL rewire and counterweight and am very happy with the results. It took the P9 up a notch or two.

Buy an LP12/Ittok/Karma setup wink Or the modern equivalent: LP12/Lingo/Akito 2/Klyde or use an Armegeddon instead of the Lingo.

The new P9 is a very good deck though! It has a lot of charismatic appeal and an effortless and spacious presentation.

Compare the two decks side-by-side. They are different, so different that your preference will become immediately obvious.

I've had mine since 96. Not much to say really. I love it. You may hate it. Have a listen to the new one and compare it to the LP12 and other decks of similar calibre.

The P9 has great synergy with naim electronics. It is rythmically unlike any TT I have ever heard. Some find it light weight sounding in comparison to the LP12 and I find the LP12 blubbery. Horses for courses, which is why you should have a listen to some other TT's too.

Haven't heard the new p9. It should be demoed with a good cartridge (lots of p9 forum members use Dynavector) and preferably in your system, so phono stages also need to be considered.

Good luck!

The new Rega P9 manual is now available @ www.rega.co.uk

They seem to be missing a couple pages.

I'm a big fan and I've promised myself that I'll one day own a P9, but Rega's explaination for the lame new logo is pretty... er, lame.

Thanks for the replies. I decided to buy the P9 with the new RB1000 arm. It should arrive next week. I will post comments later. I hope it gives me more detail than the P3 and less hassles than my old LP12.

Good choice. What colour? I like the combination of a light wood with a kermit-green mat.

Hmm, sounds quite familiar…

..also a good choice!

I can safely say that it will be better than the P3! Which cartridge have you gone for?

...I searched Yahoo for Rega a few days ago and *did not* get a hi-level hit on their site. It may have been one of the sites returned from the search, but I never got down to it.

I have a Van Den Hul MC10 special (quite a mouthful!!), but I have read good stuff regarding Ortofon with Rega's. Any suggestions?

Well, here it is, my new P9! First it is a very handsome piece and with the black ash trim, it matches my Dynaudio 80 speakers. The sound is a tremendous boost from the P3. Much more detail and PRaT. Not as rich as the LP12 but very nice and MUSICAl. The set up was easy as with other Rega Tables. The power supply was a lot bigger than I thought but it is nice to have 45 rpm's again. I am very happy with my purchase and am sharing pictures. Thanks for all the advice.

Here is another picture of the P9. This thing sounds really good! I am working on a NAC 52, can't wait to here them together

smiglass,

If you want, you can send the original .jpgs to me, I can make them much larger and under 30k to boot...

I think your the 1st forum member to have one of these beasts!

Rega says keep the lid on, but I find it is better with the lid off. Try it. Also, it looks much cooler with the lid off (which I then probably distort in my mind as also sounding better!)

Not many Exact users with the P9. I have used it ever since i had the deck. For the money it sounds bloody marvelous! Although, to get more from the TT, this will eventually have to be upgraded (my TT, not yours!) Rega are releasing a new MC in June (allegedly) which wil be in the GBP 500-700 range (allegedly). I will give it an audition along with the Ortofon Kontrapunkts, which are supposed to be a great match for the P9/RB900 or RB1000 combo.

Enjoy your new toy!

Mike, is it the interpolation feature you use for reduction?

Andrew,

Interpopolation? Sorry, you've gone over me 'ead.
I use the image size and save quality features in Photoshop. Is there a better method?
Posted on: 26 April 2002 by Martin Payne
Interpolation is one of several methods by which multiple pixels are merged together to make the image smaller.

Have a closer look at the options on PS' dialog box next time you resize an image.
