Reccomendations for very small, cheap bookshelf speakers

Posted by: David Quigley on 06 January 2004

Hi all,

Long time no post. A request for small speakers reccomendations for a bedroom system composed of an Arcam Alpha 9 CD player and an old amp. Looking for something small that can actually be put on a bookshelf. Thinking of something not much bigger than a set of computer loudspeakers and pretty inexpensive (<$200).

Would any of you have any reccomendations.

Many thanks and happy new year to one and all.

David,

look for a second hand pair of mission 780's. They are small enough to fit on a bookshelf and offer a sound that defies their size.

I picked up a pair of Celestion 3 Mk 1 sealed boxes on e-bay a while back for £40 and they are very very good on my computer driven by a Naim 72 & 140 naturally

Rega Kyte would be another useful choice

Dear David -

From a fellow NYer! Have you heard the Paradigm Atom? They are tiny, cheap (US$160/pr) and sound pretty great. They are listed as a best value by Stereophile [URL=][URL=http://www.stereophile.com/loudspeakerreviews/664/]
(for whatever that is worth) but I did listen and they are amazing. I am definitely picking up a pair (and I promise I am not a Paradigm rep or anything.) If you go to Sound City (crappy store...) on East 45th Street betw. 5th and 6th you can listen to them.

Hi

I am using Kef Q1's with my CD5/FC2/112/150/NACA5 setup.
Very pleased with them - I paid $340 on-line somewhere.
Saving up for something better in the future.
(Hopefully have the letters M,F and S in there somewhere)

John,

That is not necessarily a good thing.

"with the exception of Maul Pessenger & Fart Mudley all hifi reviewers are deaf." - I would add Jonathon Gorse (who sometimes frequents this forum) to your list.

I dunno how much they cost in the States but my current 'class T' favorites are the Kef Coda 70 bookshelf speakers.

They are not "computer speakers size", but still quite small. The sound is tight, surprisingly open for a cheap design (that usually sound either harsh or too polite), the bass is v.good, and they don't have any obvious shortcomings.
Plus the build quality is excellent

The Chorus of JMlab is a very good small speaker. At this price level
I would go for s/h options - Cobalt is next level of Focal/JMlab.

How bout the redoubtable Wharfedale Diamond 8.1 in its latest guise?

My ex-girlfriend has a pair and I keep up my relationship with her just to listen to them on the end of an NAD 320BEE amp she has.

Can always look for a pair of used Totem Mini-mites or Mites, great speakers with a sound far larger than the tiny size of box suggests.

The Paradigm Atoms are a steal for the performance they give at the low price point.
