Speaker upgrade
Posted by: Sean Woods on 13 August 2003
Hello All!
Any ideas on which speakers I should upgrade to, I’ am currently using Dynaudio 42’s.
I have already tried the Contour 1.1 and the ProAC Tablette 8 but I still prefer my 42’s.
My room is small (13x12ft) so I still need to use bookshelf speakers
My kit is as follows:-
CDX / NAC102 / NAPSC / NAP250 / HI-CAP
I would appreciate any response
Thanks
Sean

Sean,
Have you considered Mission's 780's. They are wonderful little speakers.

XPS?

Hello Sean,
Are you sure you want to change the 42's? They're a great little speaker which would take advantage of upgrades further up the chain such as an XPS or an 82.
However, if you really want to change, you would need to choose between two options - more of the same, or something different.
For more of the same, you could listen to Dynaudio's new Contour s1.4. It's a much bigger sound with better pace, transparency and resolution. Quite something.
For a change, have a listen to Totem Acoustics speakers. You could consider Totem Mites for example. Another option with which I have been most impressed is the Royd RR3 speaker. Fantastic fun for the money.
I am surprised that you're restricting yourself to standmounts. In my experience, floorstanders use similar space to standmounts. If you really are pushed for space a floorstander designed to go near the wall would be preferable to a freestanding standmount. Without this restriction, you would be able to listen to Naim's own speakers such as Intro2's or Allae's (though I suspect these may be a stretch financially), or even a late second hand pair of SBLs which you should find for around £1000 - £1200 depending on age/finish.
Regards,
Frank.
All opinions are my own and do not reflect the opinion of any organisations I work for, except where this is stated explicitly.

Thanks for your responses; sorry I took so long to get back to you all!
I have been considering the XPS PSU but I ‘am going to bypass the old olive version and save for a new XPS2.
In the mean time I have always thought that my 42’s may have been letting the amps down, over £4000 worth and only using £400 speakers!
(Even though, well I think anyway that the 42’s where over engineered)
Does anybody know what the most commonly used book shelf speaker is on a Naim system?
After reading through the forum (Going back years) it seems that the Spendor 2/3 seems to pop up from time to time.
Thanks
Sean

Probably old Linn Kans in various forms!
I'm using Linn Katans (pretty muchthe closest modern Linn speaker to the old Kan) and am very satisfied. They do seem to need the dedicated Linn stands though.
Cheers,
Simon

To me that seems like a good way of building a sistem, especially as you have a small room and don't need bigger speakers.
