FlatCap 2 Cable Help Needed FAST
Posted by: Greg Beatty on 30 May 2003
All -
When buying a FlatCap 2 new, what cables are included with the unit? I've got an eye on a 2nd-hand one and neither the seller nor I know what should be with it.
I believe he has one SNAIC-5 to power a CD5 and, of course, the power cord.
I would need an additional SNAIC-5 and a SNAIC-4 to power my Nait 5. Should these have been included? If not, what is the usual charge for these?

Greg,
the Flatcap 2 comes with one SNAIC 5 and a power cord as standard.
If you wish to power 2 items you will need an additional SNAIC5 (and a SNAIC 4 if it's a Nait 5) which can be purchased from your Naim dealer.

Thank you Richard
I will probably have a Nait 5/CD5/FC2/Allae less a SNAIC 5 and SNAIC 4 this afternoon

Nait 5 and Allæ?
Greg
Is the Nait 5 and Allæ a feasible combination? I have Credos and the Naim recommendation is minimum 112/150. I've never understood why, but hi-fi wasn't meant to be simple, or was it?
!!! There's always money somewhere for the next upgrade... !!!

I've not demoed Nait 5/Allae vs. 112/150 Allae directly so I cannot comment on the differences.
FWIW, I spoke with Hawthorn Stereo in Seattle, one of the best-know and respected Naim dealers in the states, and was told that the Allae is a fairly easy load and they sell Nait/Allae combos.
I used to own 72/hi/140 and compared on several occaisions to a Nait 3. Honestly, without the hicap, the 72/140 sounded better but not *that* much better. I'm hoping that a Nait 5/*-cap will better the Nait 3 by a good margin in terms of juice available to drive the speakers.
Oh, I also do not like buying and selling speakers - its a pain! And the speakers are in our living room. These two factors led me to spend for the Allaes, which look and sound fab, rather than Intros. I didn't know - and still don't believe - that Credos were an option in the states.
Are Intros easier to drive than Credos/Allaes? I figured they were the same so Nait/Intros would not be better than Nait/Allaes.

Sad News -
The CD5 and FlatCap 2 were not what they were cracked up to be
The CD5's case was dented near the drawer mechanism, the FC2's sockets were *very* loose at the back (hearing metal on metal when I jiggled the SNAIC), and the plugs/cords were not the original Naim cords

FWIW, I believe the gentleman I was dealing with is honest and did not know about these issues.

Linds,
At least at normal loudness, this means no neighbours ringing at the door, the Nait 5/Allae combination sounds very, very good in my living room.
I have compared the Intro's and the Allae's in combination with a NAIT 5 at my dealer and found the Allae's sounds substantial better than the Intro's.

And besides, the Allaes made The Absolute Sound's list of the 24 most desirable speakers

That's normal. They are on a "suspended" board and no tied to the box.

I know they are not directly tied to the box, but should they have *a lot* more play in them than the sockets on a Nait 5 or CD5? I was hearing metal on metal
The seller mentioned sending the boxes to Naim in Chicago to get them both looked at. I also believe he has removed his ad from Audiogon.
I think he's a very reputable guy and honestly was bothered when I found the bent case on the CD5 and noticed the power cords were not original.
