Links to music sites with (legal) complete samples
Posted by: Nick_S on 09 September 2005
I enjoy exploring new artists and styles of music, so I thought I would start a thread to enable people to place useful links to (legal) sites with complete music tracks for downloading.
My contribution is for progressive rock at the Prog Archives which I have found both informative and readable:

IMHO you just need to click here to get at the best complete samples on the Internet - anybody who knows me can guess where it leads.

Rotf, these links to John Peel and Andy Kershaw HMHB sessions look good.

An Absolute Must!!! He was God
Jonathan
EDIT: The link above is to the John Peel website and has fully downloadable session tracks from the full range of bands he supported over recent years + links to other similar John Peel sites. Possibly the best access to Peel session tracks on the web

Great, keep the suggestions coming (this will put my mp3 player to good use), but could we have a brief description rather than having to guess where the link might lead? Jonathan, I thought you were going to say Elvis :-)
Matador Records have quite a number of sample tracks from their artists, some of whom were played on John Peel programmes:

My first goes to Half Man Half Biscuit's official web site.
My second goes to a comedy site and has music from
Half Man Half Biscuit
They Might Be Giants
Sparks
Syd Barrett
The Purple Gang
Paul Simon
The Presidents Of The United States Of America
The Skids
Status Quo
B52s
The Verve
There are a few interesting Syd Barrett sites, but I'm not sure how official they are - so I won't include links to Vegetable Man or Scream Thy Last Scream.

Has anybody listened to Foo Foo who have recorded two superb CDs on naim's label. Foo Foo are Lisa Fitzgerald and Jan Reay and come from Dorset and play in pubs and clubs all over the Southwest of England.
You can sample the music on these two links
1. At the Swallowcliffe
2. At the Rehearsal Room

Nap-ster,
Wow are we really in this month's Q magazine? That's cool!
I don't subscribe, but can you be so kind as to scan that piece of the page in the magazine and post it up?
You email it to me privately as well to anthonyv at brainlink dot com.
Thanks!

Any body used the progrock archive latley?
I have D/L many MP3s. It seems now that all the free tunes are streams (Flash7). I don't see a way to save these.
Am I doing some thing wrong or changed a setting (IE) or is has the site changed?

Howard,
Looks like they have changed the site to me. I can't see any obvious way to save these files. You can always stream them and record it to HDD at the same time using something like TotalRecoder (not as convenient)
Total Recorder
Pity that, a really good site.

"It seems now that all the free tunes are streams"
That's a shame, and counterproductive for getting a new audience for a band --- it is no longer straightforward to try out the tunes on an MP3 player, needing instead to be on-line to listen to the stream.
