HDX SSD experience?

Posted by: yeti.fro on 02 July 2010

Hi,

are there already any HDX-SSD users out there?

I always liked the HDX, but simply couldnt stand it´s noise, so I was forced to get a DS... I now hope that the SSD version is finally enjoyable, giving me the chance to get back to a linnless set. Sure there´s still a fan inside, but how loud is it when not masked by the screaming hard disks?

thx n brgds...TC

Would an SSD run hotter? My HDX (HD version) fan has certainly never needed to switch on.

No. SSD (solid state disk) uses a lot less power than a HDD

Andy,

I am slightly drifting off-topic, but it is related. I know you have a SSD in your home made 'transport', is this purely to eliminate the audible sound that comes from a HDD or are there other benefits? I have a MacBook Pro with HDD and sit close to it when I play music but I don't really notice the sound from it.

Hi Gav -

Really fast pre-thunderstorm shut downs and subsequent boot ups with mine. Makes my poor little Atom processor feel a whole lot bigger and stronger.

Gav,

It was a silence thing for me (although it's not totally silent, you can just hear the fans in there in a silent room), plus all my media is stored elsewhere, so I didn't need a big disk. I use 3G of a 30G drive to run linux/xbmc.

Hopefully we never had an HDX that had "screaming" hard discs - but of course anything that has a hard disc in it is very difficult to make silent ... my V+ HD box is *MUCH* louder than my hard disc equipped HDX that's for sure!

The fan in the HDX should only run when the unit reaches a combination of temperatures which are determined to be excessive - if you are getting your fan running for any significant time (except in really hot weather) then I would suggest that there's something going on that needs investigation.

Cheers

Just popped into my local dealer and they had a HDX SSD running (and a Unitserve too - very neat). Anyone running one, or compared it to the standard HDX ?

Cheers

While this is true - they still run surprisingly hot.

let us all know who forced you and we'll send the lads round to sort 'em out - that kind of bullying has to stop IMHO, if nobody minds.
