Memory foam mattresses - Advice

Posted by: KeanoKing on 30 August 2008

Well it's time for a new mattress and now there seems to be a new technology - Memory Foam. Has anyone tried one out Winker

Current mattress is a pocketed sprung type - not sure if to change?

We have been using a Tempur mattress now for 2 or 3 years. I would never go back to a traditional sprung job.
They are fairly costly, & there are cheaper "copy" alternatives out there.
Some people find that they get warmer on a tempur mattress than a regular one, & they can take about a week or so to get used to. I think this was discussed here a while ago so try a search. Someone said that they were turned off Tempur by the "bose" style adverts & marketing & there may be a similarity.
The Tempur mattress has put paid to me & the mrs' back problems, you don't have to flip them every 6 mths or so, & bed-bugs are also a thing of the past.
They do a no obligation home trial (theres the bose style advertising, I guess) so from a 100% satisfied convert, I'd say its worth a go.

We've had our memory mattress for a good few years now & we wouldn't be without it. The only problem is having to get out of it in the morning!

Like manicatel I've found the chronic back complaint I've had for a while is considerably relieved by sleeping on it.

They take a bit of getting used to - you sink in a fair bit - but because your weight's more evenly distributed you don't need to move about at night to relieve pressure spots.

Highly recommended!

Tempur user myself for the last five years--the best solution I've found for back problems but lousy for sex. There is no bounce.

Dave, this is a worry. As a aman who spends more time having sex than sleeping this is going to be a problem Winker

Well this is the one i'm thinking of getting, still sprung but with memory foam and half price from a very good company in terms of customer service IMHO

Chaps

I first purchased a memory foam bed about 10 years ago and it is still going strong.

I was so impressed that I bought a couple more for the other beds in the house and for all of the beds in my Spanish house.

They are a no brainer in my opinion.

Hi,

A friend of mine has just purchased one and he prefers the sprung type for obvious reasons.

It's not as if you can audition one befre you purchase Big Grin

One can live ones life without copulating but one cannot live without sleep.

I have had back problems for years and have now used Tempur for about 5 years, it is great, both for letting me get some sleep and also for relaxing the muscle stress in my back.
Takes a day or two to get used to, but I certainly would never go back to a tradional mattress

What are the Tempur pillows like?
Posted on: 31 August 2008 by tonym
We couldn't get on with the pillows on their own, they're a bit too low. Fine with another ordinary pillow underneath though!

It's best to try the different densities out in a shop before buying; think there's three.

KK,

Thats the mattress that I use and they are brilliant, you feel so supported and when you have to sleep in another mattress, you really really miss your memory one. The odd occasion when I 'disagree' with my partner and I force myself to the back room, I know that I have cut my nose off to spite my face as I blood regret it!!

So, yes they are brilliant mattresses!

Hi

We have a pocket sprung mattress with a memory foam topper. Best of both worlds, but bloody expensive. Go to a specialist bed shop not a department store, ours is a Staples but Silent Night do cheaper versions that are also good.

Great for sleep plus the added springWinker

Cheers

We have a similar set-up to Karl, a John Lewis own-brand which is brilliant for sleep and other horizontal pursuits! Winker This model is available in different degrees of firmness and can be made with a diffrent firmness on each side, which might suit if you can't agree which you like best! It was quite fun test driving them (to the extent that decency allowed!) in John Lewis Kingston. However it is always a bit of a gamble: it takes a few nights to really decide how well you will sleep on a new mattress.

We have one Tempur pillow each. I use mine on it's own and find it very comfortable but Rachels alternates between Tempur and her firm hypoallergenic jobbie. Horses for courses.

My wife has used a Tempur pillow for years and can't sleep without it. I used a low (classic) Tempur pillow but it was too low and I added another standard pillow for some support.

Then we got a combi-foam/sprung mattress and I went back to using just the classic tempur pillow very happily. The combi-mattress was from Dreams and we got it for a (relative) snip. I agree that they can be a bit difficult to get out of, they do seem a little warmer than normal mattresses and combis tend to be much higher which is both weird and a pain since you need to replace some of your bedding. It tok me a week to get used to, but it took my wife nearly the full 4 weeks to get used to. The full 4 weeks? Dreams sell you the mattress with a 30-day back guarantee provided it is returned in the same condition it went out. They say they know it's an unusual sleeping experience so they take the risk.

Hope you're right Dave, we just bought one for ourselves, replacing an 18 year old Serta. I've had back problems the last few months.

We had a tempur matress for a few months, thankfully I did not pay too much for it. It put my back out and my wife loathed it. Happily I sold it for more than I paid and we use a traditional matress now.

All I would say is don't skimp on the cost regardless of the product you go for.

Do you recall which one you had? I tried out about 5 different models in the store and only one felt right for me. The salesman told me it takes awhile for the foam to break-in and your body to get used to the change as well. He suggested having our kids walk or jump on it to break in the foam structure faster. We got what's called in the US, the DeluxeBed, the cheapest model with the Dual-Airflow System, which will hopefully make for a cooler nights sleep.

Both my partner and I use one (each). We like them a lot. A bit strange at first, though. I'm sure I toss and turn less with this style of pillow.

We have a Tempur mattress and it's brilliant. One thing is that you cannot turn them over, which is good as they weigh a ton. Our 5' one cost us £400 reduced from over £1200 in a warehouse clearance - probably our best bargain ever!
