Don't slate Intros

Posted by: mystik on 18 January 2003

I'm a relative Naim newbie. I've had a cd3.5 with flat cap (helps alot to soften the sound), a Nait 3 amp and a pair of B&W CDM1SE's. I've been following this forum immensely in the past weeks to get a feel for the Intro and Credo speakers. I finally found a cheap pair of Intros (later version with external crossovers) as that's all my budget can handle right now. I can't quite believe it. My £650 B&W's never really stopped winning awards from What Hi-Fi but it would appear to me that there is no substitute for Naim speakers in a full Naim system. They are clearly engineered to match perfectly.

On the Intro's all instruments sounded twice as real, I'm blown away. The whole sound is dryer and less electronic. I shut my eyes and it feels more real, live the artists are in the room not a hi-fi system!

I also purchased a NAC72 and NAP140 but I'm waiting for a preordered SNAIC to arrive before I can plug it all up. I expect the improvement over my Nait 3 AND with the new speakers probably die of shock.

Welcome Aboard!

You know you're really not that alone in your choice? Quite a few of us out here run full Naim systems it's just that we're too busy lissenin and enjoying to spend time writing about it these days.
Seems to me that you either Get it or you don't with a full Naim rig and it seems like you're one of the lucky few around who actually does Get it.

Enjoy the Music!

PS Try a Hicap on the 72

Well done. Good choice of gear. I went from Arcam cd player with Nait3r and Coda 7s, to Intros, then 72 and 140, then with Hi-cap, then CDX and finally 102 and 180. At this point I handed my notice in and have still got the Intros! Still doing their thing and I'm reluctant to change them, mainly 'cos the next step could be very expensive.

I agree, Intros are superb. Fast and Tight, with no bass resonance. Much prefer them to Linn Keilidhs and all the usual alternatives....and that comes from someone who is not a devoted fan of some of Naims electronics( I use an (older) Linn based vinyl/cd/amp system)) I suppose I should upgrade to something more expensive, but have just bought a new car, so will have to wait...

I find Intros to be a tad woolly in the bass.

The Credos are much better in this regard.

Steve.

Steve

I've owned both for quite a period of time and wouldn't say that Intros had a "wooly" bass. I'm taking you mean wooly to be kinda soft, not very well defined and maybe a little lite?

Intros and Credos are very sensitive to set-up - like any speaker! Siting them properly (completely room dependent of course) and placing them in screws improves their performance no end.

That's about the size of it. There is a touch of overhang too, ime with the Intros, although this was cured when the Intros were substituted for Credos.

Mana Sound Bases would probably help too.

Steve.

Wolly bass Intro = rocking cabinet caused by spike out of adjustment. Often accompanied by hard, screechy, distorted treble.

I really think some of the negative comments about this speaker come from the fact they're a bit difficult to setup (fighting the leaf spring/low-mass cabinet on thick carpet thing) It's a shame, these speakers are capable of revealing much of an upper-end Naim rig.

Intro 1s and Keith Jarrett playing behind me as I type.

Dave,

The Intros (2s) - and the Credos following them were set up correctly with no wobbly spike issues.

The treble was fine in both cases.

Interestingly, I know a guy with Intro 2s who acquired them because a previous owner upgraded to them over his Intro 1s. He prefered the 1s to the 2s, and so returned the 2s enabling my friend to buy the 2s at a reduced price.

What time is it where you are now???

Steve.

Hi Steve,

Maybe it's a series 2 thing then (never heard series 2 myself), however, what you've described is a sign of spike wobble with series 1 (at least on concrete floors). Also, you get "one-note" bass with a spike out.

It's 11.29 PM across the pond on the East Coast as I type ;-)

Dave, the floors were concrete, if a bit uneven.

The bass was tuneful, but a bit too "fruity" at the same time with the Intros.

Bringing in the Credos was a case of, " I wonder if we can fix that slightly exuberant bass?"

With the Credos we fixed it.

You probably weren't hearing either Intros or Credos at their best.
