Pete Atkin

Those of you who can remember the university concert round of a quarter of a century ago may recall Pete Atkin. He was aided in that the lyrics to his songs were penned by Clive James but commercial success was elusive-Pete memorably described his career as going from an unknown to a legend without the intervening period of success.Clive went off to TV and fame-Pete became a producer at the BBC.The really great news is that Pete's six albums are available on three CDs at only £10 a throw and his late 1970s songs are available for the first time RCA wouldn't issue them. Now I would not dream of telling my fellows at this site what to listen to but I'm buying a new Naim system to celebrate that is how much I rate Pete Atkin (and I suppose Naim).www.peteatkin.com is the unorginally titled site to visit.Cheers Tony

I picked up a vinyl copy of 'Road of Silk' about 6 months ago, think I've only played it once. Some of the songs are quite good and I was surprised to find that Clive James had penned them, but Pete Atkin doesn't really have a voice does he?

David,I must say that it never has occured to me that Pete Atkin 'doesn't really have a voice'.I am willing to admit that the first time I heard him Pete did not impress me because he was performing The Road of Silk with a bunch of sessionmen.Happily, after 45 minutes the sessionmen got thirsty and left Pete to do some his earlier stuff - at this moment-June 1974 I saw the light. Why not give 'The Road...' another spin?Cheers Tony
