On The Beach

I've been listening to this over the last weekend and again last night over at Oldie's place.
We wondered what the controversy was surrounding this album and why it remained unavailable for so long. It's obviously an intense and very personal album, but then so is a lot of Neil Young's stuff. I think this is one of the best albums he has ever produced and would love to learn the story that comes with it. I have had a quick Google, but can't find anything convincing.
Anyone know the story?

I always thought it was because Young didn't think CD was worthy of releasing ANYTHING on sonically, and he had the rights to the master tapes for "On the beach". Maybe I'm wrong though.
I love the album cover

That was certainly what he said Dom, but I think it was an excuse to hide the real reasons. It didn't stop him releasing Earlier stuff and continue to release new albums on CD.
Oldie - We have a telepathic link - but I can type faster
I know you would like it to be political, and that is certainly the view of my friend who was down for the weekend - something about the cover he says - the newspaper headline or something which is too small to read on the CD insert, but I think it was more likely to be personal.
I wish I knew.

There was an article on this in, I think, Mojo a while (year?) ago. Can't exactly remember, but I think N.Y.wanted the album withdrawn because the songs were too dark; something to do with him writing it just after someone close to him had just died. Maybe I've got it lying around somewhere, I'll have a look. I can't recall him saying anything about CD being not worthy; It was released on LP anyway; I've got an original copy on vinyl.

Agree with Rasher, he's a curmudgeonly old sod and I wouldn't necessarily believe any reasons he gives. This was part of his 'doom' trilogy. Another part of the trilogy 'Time Fades Away' is likewise impossible to find although 'Tonights The Night' has been consistently available even though its the one that deals most directly with the emotional turmoil he experienced following the deaths of Bruce Berry and Danny Whitten.
BTW, whatever is going on with the long promised box-set of unreleased stuff ???

Someone else's "Curmudgeonly old Sod" is anothers Socially Aware Savior
and I'm in favor of the latter.
ZUMA being one of ,if not my all time favorite
album. On the M.P. sliding scale to social oblivion Neil Young is up at the top end with the best of them, only my[ slightly] biased opinion you understand

Quite, he is, but he can still be a Curmudgeonly old Sod.

Mojo gave the CD issue a five-star review in July 2003 in July 2003. There's also an interview with NY, in which he "ascribes the delay [in reissue] to dissatisfaction with the CD releases of his older material".
That may be so, as "On the Beach" is an HDCD release.
But, as is said above, who knows?

I don't think there is anything deeper than he just ain't a fan of CDs. It wasn't just On The Beach that wasn't released, there was 'American Stars and Bars', 'Hawks and Doves' and maybe also 'Reactor'. It's just that On the Beach is the only one that's any good so no-one was bothered about the others. These were the only albums he had the rights for (or master tapes or whatever) so he couldn't prevent the rest.

Heresy, perhaps, but a dude named Chris Lee does a terrific version of the song "On the Beach", with great, great guitar by one Smokey Hormel.
Off topic, but related. Sorry.
