Marvellous Haydn Quartets

Posted by: Gerontius' Dream on 25 July 2008

I know there have been many other threads about Joseph Haydn's string quartets, but I have just acquired the complete set, in the performances by the Aeolian Quartet (on the original Argo vinyl) and feel I must enthuse about them!

The discs are as good as new and the recordings excellent, as one expected from Decca in those days (70s). So far I have listened only to Op. 76 (which I already knew from the Kodaly Quartet recordings) and Opp. 71 and 74 which I did not previously know.

What marvellous music it is! As easy to listen to as you could want, but at the same time with tremendous depth and feeling. I cannot imagine the famous variations from the "Emperor" quartet played better, and the "Rider" quartet is a real "surprise".

It is obviously going to take a long time to get to know them all, but I am looking forward to many hours of pleasure, and observing the progress of Haydn's music from the earliest publications to his very last works.

The Aeolian may not be so well known as some other quartets, but on the evidence of these records they were first class. I went to one of their concerts in London many years ago and found them very impressive, and they made a speciality of Haydn.

I too have the same Aeolian set on vinyl. Wonderful recordings, performance and music. The Emperor is a high-light of the set as is the one on the other side of the same LP. Many hours of pleasure are in this set!

The sister set of the symphonies by Dorati are equally stimulating and it was a great pleasure to work from 1 to 104 and then feel that there was only one thing to do after this: start again! Also surpringly easy to come by good used copies.

Haydn is of course the supreme master of the string quartet genre, better even than Beethoven or Bartok. As you explore the vast body of works, pay special attention to the Op 20, 33, 50, and 77 works. All are monumental, really. Some of the lesser know works are quite fine, too, of course, like the Op 17. You can never go wrong with these works.

Dear Dai,

These Quartets offer a lifetime's worth of absorbing music to enjoy and which become seemingly ever more wonderful with acquaintance! There is not a weak link among them, from the earliest to the most profound and mature.

Though it would be a shame to miss Beethoven's Quartets out, if I had to choose one set of Quartets to have at the expense of all others, it would be these!!

There's an excellent disc of the op.76 quartets from the Budapest Quartet on United Archives - I have Todd to thank for hooking me into buying every one of these releases after his review of the Beethoven cycle.
