Every forum is about 'me' and bad spelling/grammar so you've actually made 2 good points.

Usually it's about who has the biggest ...

Damn, and I was doing well.

Mine's better than his!

Actually, the forum has less willy waving than it used to in my view. All posters are generally treated with respect regardless of their systems, on the assumption that what they say is sensible in the first place.

Nice one, Willy! I wonder if I had suggested that there had been less arse scratching recently whether Arse would make an appearance?

Not sure we should be encouraging Arse to make an appearance.

If anything its more about telling people they have to spend more money on their own gear because it won't sound very good without a DAC/Flatcap/Hicap/Supercap/Powerline/Hiline/Fraim/Aro/Superline/dedicated mains spur/USB stick....

Me niether, very little one-up-manship here, if any at all.
Seems an odd statement.
Troll anyone?

Certainly, unless you are very sure of what you want and require of replay then reading in the Hifi Corner can easily tempt extra and unplanned spending!
It can also breed dissatisfaction with a perfectly fine replay set, initially chosen as being just that. This can have insidious consequences for the unwary.
The trouble is really that people are not always sure what they want, so even the advice to audition is not always helpful, though it is pretty much the only sensible advice that can be given in general.
I sometimes think that enjoying a fine examples of manufacturing craftsmanship such as top-class Hifi can be satisfying of itself, and suspect that there is no more harm in this than being a music enthusiast with large collection of recordings, so long as people are honest with themselves and others about what the real motivation is for buying and enjoying the ownership of such items really is.
Then the keeping up with the Jones's phenomenon would not be quite such a pressure on those who struggle to compete with the most well healed!

you cannot enter the competition unless you have a 552 and live in a big house.quote:Originally posted by DAVOhorn:

It can be off putting if pushed but there's a difference between good and better. Often there's also a negative view that forces the issue to extremes. Perfect as is is just as over the top. Plenty good in general and for my needs would be more appropriate. Just as the OP describes the bigger than scenario, there is a 'nothing is significantly better than mine' one that is also common to message boards.quote:Originally posted by King Size:

We disagree then.

My post was merely intended to disagree with the OP that this site is merely a 'willy waving' competition. However there are a number of members who are given to hyperbole when it comes to upgrade options (for eg. 'CDX2 sounds broken without it' and other such assertions)
@151 - the above comments are far from imagined
