Sky HD box

I had one of the first Thomson Sky HD boxes, it went faulty and was replaced by an Amstrad box, the digital output sound is far better than the original box, I would suggest that anyone who has an early Thomson box should think about having it exchanged.

I am supprised there are any Thomsom boxes out there still working, they normally break one day after the warrenty runs out. Why can't Sky make a quality box instead of using rubbish companies to make there boxes.

A Naim box would be brilliant.

Sky bought Amstrad a few years ago.

Sky didn't use "rubbish" companies. The specifications for the boxes were poor and they had to be built down to a price.

My Thompson HD box, which I've had from the early days of Sky HD, continues to perform fine. I've replaced the capacitors in the power supply (very simple task), these being the main reason for the boxes failing, and updated it to a 1TB WD hard disk. The other internal components seem pretty decent.

The sound's not bad, the main limitation being the quality of the encoded broadcast IMO.

You can buy "tuned up" HD boxes but they're expensive and don't seem to offer much more than an improved power supply.

My original Sky+ 160, made by Thompson, continues on its merry way after 5 years. Within days of the warranty expiring it developed a mysterious fan noise that was unbearably loud. It was almost as persistent as the accompanying phone calls asking if I wanted an extended warranty! I ignored both and here I am. The box operates silently now. Funny that!
