Round Earth calling Flat Earth

Posted by: Arthur Bye on 21 March 2001

Since Naim has let on that they have an A/V preamp coming out in the near future, does anyone have any idea on the specs?

Is it an add on to a current pre or is it a stand alone? Is it a complete conversion to 5.1 surround sound or what?

Paul and Paul any words from above would be appreciated.

Will I finally be able to get rid of my Sony/Pioneer/Bose/Onkyo claptrap, or must I still suffer with having two entirely separate systems?

How about some real world info on what this baby is going to do.

Actually the point is not where these connotations began, but the fact that they are still being used.

In ancient times it was upheld that the world was flat, not spherical. It was later established that the world is indeed elliptical, and that belief has been (thankfully) verified since.

Naim and Linn's avoidance of this mix and match madness, and their own fundamental approaches in hi-fi based on sensibility and logic earned them the reputation of being flat-earthers. You may want to guess why, but my guess is the reasons are'nt very nice.

At least this is my understanding (or lack thereof) of this matter.

PS I wonder if the AV1 is now irrelevant??? roll eyes

We are just putting the finishing touches to the product, we have not yet informed our dealers of exact specs ( which may change) so please bear with us a little longer and you will get all the info you need.

Lets see.....

Leslie: The aspects of Flat Earth I think are best summarized in a treatise that Robert Harley wrote for Sterophile about 10 years ago. Don't know the exact edition, but I'm sure there are others out there with more exact information.

To summarize: Flat Earth advocates pace, rhythm and timing (frequently referred to on the Forum as "PRaT")over soundstaging and imaging which are considered artifically created artifacts of music reprodution. Round Earth is more or less the opposite. Round Earthers often refer to Flat Earthers as Luddites.

Naim, Linn = Flat Earth
Krell, Levinson, etal = round earth

Do a search on the Stereophile web site and I think you'll find it.

Paul: thank you for the timely update. Despite the rancor that seems to go on endlessly on the Forum I would like to say that I appreciate the attention that Naim provides its customers. This, along with the quality of you product has kept me loyal. There is no other manufacturer that provides this level of service to my knowledge. I will await further word.

JWSzuhay: Glad to hear you like Mana. It's a personal thing you either like it or you don't. You're next step is stage 4 for a similar improvement. I've found that the CDS1 to be one of the sources most improved by Mana.

Cliff: I don't beleive that the Forum censors the word Mana. Asterisks are not needed. It's not a curse word afterall.
