I think a cosmetic surgical procedure could prove to be problematic.

Have people really got nothing better to do with their time? Or perhaps research grants should be looked at.

Yes, people have many such "better" things to do. Human beings love to stereotype, assume and accept "conventional" wisdom. Much, if not most of it is, er, bollocks. The only way such things can be challenged is by actual research.
That research may not interest us; we may find the conclusions intuitively incorrect. Generally though there's good stuff out there adding to the sum of human knowledge.
On the other hand you have the triple whammy of poorly done and explained research; a media who only publish positive results and a failure amongst the general public to appreciate that what they may be reading might be a press release rather than research; that the media are generally appalling when it comes to understanding or explainf science, and, that there is a difference between correlation and causation.
So, yes, I don't think they have better things to do. However, do five minutes research on who funded this and the while thing gets viewed in an entirely different light!!!

A more pertinent question would be 'why are women attracted to men with big feet?'
I'm a size 13 by the way!

You know what they say about men with big feet.
They need big shoes.

I just saw Tilda Swinton in movie I am Love. 2 friends noticed she had large feet, for some strange reason I didn't notice, she looked so incredible in all that Italian fashion and palazzo. Great movie.
I remember being in MOCA museum years ago and one artist blew up a manikin to about 10 foot tall and had her pink dress, shoes and handbag all tailored. It was quite intimidating to get near her.
