£70 Billion for Trident replacement

Blimey!
I just can't imagine why this sort of expense on nuclear weapons can be justified when so many better things can be done with the money, except of course that the government don't seem to be able to improve things no matter how much they have to spend on things.
If all nuclear equipped countries spent their defence budget on tackling global warming, or cancer, wouldn't we all be a lot better off? We live in a very sad f***ed-up world.

Couldn't the British government just tax rich people more? You'd soon have the 70 billion quid, and nobody gets hurt.

We'd have to get the tory government out first!

What about Scotland? Got to be worth at least 70 billion. Give the right of first refusal to the Scots, then open the bidding. (Make sure that whoever buys it agrees to have no military.)

70 billion quid - and no one gets hurt.

Good idea, & not a bad price, but the buyer would have to agree to take back all their home grown politicians (frankly, we've had more than enough of the a$$holes); and of course we'd want to retain the hunting rights, and also the sub-surface mineral rights as well, just in case there is anything worth having left.

Scotland for £70 Billion! More like £7 if some one would accept responsibility for the pointless politicians it continues to produce...

Yes give Ecosse and its people, including sly politicians complete independence whether the populace of that fair land want it or not!

Fredrik

PS: More liberally democatically let us just have a referendum across the whole of the UK and let the majority have the way.

What about getting rid of the entire speculative derivatives market - along with the derivatives traders?

That should save at least 70 billion quid - and nobody gets hurt!

Only if you agree to a referendum across the same populace on whether to scrap Radio 3 and subsidies for classical orchestras Winker

The outcome of referenda are highly variable. Because they are single-issue based, their outcomes have been shown to be easily affected by the amount of education that is thrown at the electorate before the referendum.

In other words, whoever has the money to bankroll the best campaign will buy their desired outcome.

So, no more or less democratic than what is already in place.

Dear Ian,

I have axe to grind with the Scots! Only the Politicians that come and then rule the whole of UK... Badly!

I'm sure with our shared Viking blood, axe grinding was a traditional bonding exercise. Smile

Damn now I have to try to find out where the phrase comes from ....

I can just imagine it! Fred and Ian in silly [Pythonesque] headgear at the grindstone cheweing the cud, sharpening our Axes!

That made me smile! Fredrik

The current standoff with Iran shows what a powerful deterrent Trident is!
