Naimie get together in Vienna
Posted by: Franz K on 27 October 2008
I thought Id start a new thread on this theme trying to sort out a few issues:
Timing?: Spring/early summer 2009
for example June (9)10-14(15) (the 11th being a holiday over here)
How long: Extended Weekend? (thursday through monday?)
Accommodation: Ideal would be a hotel somewhere near the center of the city. One hotel for all?
Who is going to come, how many?
Local Team: Who else of us is living in Vienna?
Involvement of local dealer? (longtone)
Ideas for cultural program:
Musikverein, Konzerthaus, Opera, Museums, Heurigen, (Bus)tour outside of Vienna..
Cheers
Franz
PS: Very exciting, would love if this is going to fly

Why bother with hifi if you are going to Vienna - there is enough live music to keep you busy all the time.

Very much so Derek.
Other reasons for me suggesting this additional to the ones I put forward on Ken's thread are for example very good communication links - getting to the city from the airport can take as little as 20 minutes, cheap flights, nice carrier from the UK (I travelled with Austrian air - what a nice change - plenty of space, larger seats all for £150 return when I booked in advance) Obviously, Austrian will fly from many other places in Europe. IMHO The general feel of the place for a foreigner was excellent. There was just so much to see and do if I'd had the time - everyone was so helpful when I was out and about, plus everyone I spoke to spoke English! Very useful to me, given my almost complete lack of German

Anyway, enough said as I need to get on and do some work.
Kind regards,
Peter

I worked in the centre of Vienna for 12 weeks one summer many years a go - a very pleasant place. Lots of concerts.

Would somebody who has an essentially Linn system, but who likes all sorts of music and hifi, be welcome? I only have a CD5 and a flatcap. Although it is a flatcap2 if that scores more points. And Naim are my second favourite amplifiers.

Absolutely, should be wonderful if you'd come.

Hi Franz
I may come if there is room.
You don't want too many folk in the listening room. All the bodies affect the sound of the system quite a bit as I found out when I had 7 big blokes in my room onetime
Of course you have a bigger room than I do...
regards
Geoff

i guess this is a difficult event to organize so that all attending get "something" out of it. it would seem strange to have a naim do without naim, but then, i guess that hifi sessions would only really work in small groups, and not sure whether spouces (spice?) would enjoy this kind of thing.
anyway, lets keep thinking.

The spouces can have their own program during the music sessions...

Hi Franz,
as a fan of classical music I´d be very pleased to visit Vienna. From my home the Austrian capital is not so far away, I can even reach it by train.
Meeting alot of Naimies there the Vienna tour should become a very exciting event. I am also looking forward to a sightseeing tour with a Fiaker
.
Best wishes
Manfred

and afterwards go to a restaurant and have fiaker stew - I was never sure whether it was the horse, the cart or the man driving the fiaker that was included in the stew.

Probably one of the nicest places I've ever been, but it didn't seem very funny to post that.

Hi Franz,
Sounds like an excellent idea, if the timings and space availability permit then I/we would love to join

Hi Ken, Geoff, Edouard,
I agree, its difficult to organize, yet with some effort it should be possible to do. I feel, it would be definitely worth the effort to have such a get together on a personal ground. So lets see how it evolves.
Obviously, the key issues are to figure out who/how many of us would like to come and of course when. It should be enough time ahead for everyone to plan vacations, job-related issued etc. Also the season is of importance. Its much nicer if its warm and sunny. Also availability of hotelrooms/cheap airfairs is something to take into account.
Since our common interest is naim it would make sense only, if we had some listening sessions here as well. I can see this happen at my place, yet under certain circumstances. The main issue will be number of persons. I feel me and my spouse will be overburdoned, if we had, lets say much more than 10 persons at our home at the same time. (although we are trained with extesive kids parties with 15-20 kids buzzing around).
Lets not worry about bored spouses - I think the city offers enough oportunities for our wives to spend their time during our listening sessions.
Since we are on a public forum I do not feel comfortable to reveal my identity/contact details here. I would very much like to see Dr. Peter, who I think has the best personal contacts, to arrange email contacts among trusted forum members. Peter, and not only that, but you have to promise that you come too (and dont forget the arok**l)
Hi Michael, hi Norman
It would also be desirable if other Viennese Naimowners would join; thank you Michael for your commitment. Since I dont know Norman's customer in Vienna with active DBLs and I am not sure, if he is on this forum manybe you, Norman could contact him and inform him about the possibility of a meeting in vienna and ask him whether he would like to join. Also our local dealer -longtone- could be a place to meet. He does have some 500 series kit, yet no DBLs
For the moment this is all I can think of
Cheers,
Franz

Yes Franz, I very much agree about everyone's private contact details. I am happy to do that, as I'm sure people know how to get hold of me. (hint: not in profile, but find a dealer helps)
Franz, I am happy to come, so long as I'm not treading on anyone's toes locally.
Kind regards,
Peter
P.S. I think Polarbear may be up for the visit too if he has time.

Hi Franz,
I'm nearly an Austrian (Australian) and have a very similar system to you, so do I qualify as an honoury Austie?
Anyway, Vienna sounds like it would be a nice place to visit in summer.
Keep us informed, and in the meantime, I'll try to keep a few pennies aside, you never know
