I think its an inprovement on the first both in lyrics & the music ,have on vinyl & cd ( for the car & MP3 transfer)

I have it also and highly recommend it. I wouldn't say it was better than the first though. I thought the first was fantastic for a group of young guys launching their first album. The new album doesn't dissapoint but i think after all the hype that surrounded the first album leading upto it's release that it was amazing that it (imo) lived up to it.
I am sure i saw the cd on cdwow.com for only £6.99 delivered.

I also think it is a better album than the first (which was pretty good) the musicianship is improved. Although his voice does get on my tits after a while.

Worse than the first....far worse.
The music is more accomplished but to me they haven't moved on musically and the catchy tunes aren't there. There's certainly nothing to get close to Mardy Bum, San Fransisco or IBTYLGOTD.
Additionally all the songs seem to be about girls not fancying you and chav blokes hitting you which I'd pretty much hoped would have moved on by a second album.
Just my thoughts but I'm a bit disappointed with it to be honest.

While it can never have the impact of the first album I think it is a great record. You will probably find 'Shayman's' views unrepresentative regarding this record. You have to remember that they are very, very young and this release is barely 12-months after their debut. Think back to the Beatles and it took them quite a few albumns to really move things forward and they had 3 songwriters. I am not really sure what you can expect a 21 year old to write about (the problems in the middle east, Scottish devolution the Russia/Chechnia conflict?) other than his ultimately restricted world view. They are great band, probably the best since the smiths, they are young gifted and best of all from Sheffield! Buy the album enjoy and appreciate it now rather than looking back fondly in 10 years time!

You may be right. I was just speaking as I had found it, but to be honest it reminded me very much of The Streets second (and third for that matter!) album.
His first album on release was really something fresh and new by a young artist, writing about his own experiences of life with fantastically catchy and original tunes. The later albums didn't progress that potential and in fact used a lot of what was good on 'Original Pirate Material' as a cliched form for all future songs which never captured the infectious tunes again.
Best band since the Smiths? A long way to go I'd say

Oh well, I think me and the Shayman have different tastes, I think the Streets best record is a 'grand don't come for free'. I don't actually think the Arctics are anything like the streets musically, although they are both brilliant lyrically.

Have to say, having not listened to the first album at all, that I think I made a mistake buying this.. Its really not doing anything for me, and seems a little music by numbers..
I'll give it a few more listens, pehaps its just not clicking.

I think the first two Streets records are great but for raw impact 'Original Pirate material' has it for me in a raw 'shit in a tray' way of a lairy lad out on the pull. It for me had the same feel as the Artic's first album. Lyrically very clever and a fresh almost punk attitude. Sorry will have to buy the 2nd Artics album to comment.
I think Turner has the potential to be a great if not greater writer than Moz but I thought that about Mike Skinner and think he will find it hard to change his groove.

Original Pirate Material was the best imo.

Weaker than first album but some good songs. More commercial effort in wrong direction imo. Also has a slightly rushed feel.
Depends probably where you come to the band from- if like me its from a rock/heavy/punk interest then I think you will like this less than the first album. If however you are more indy then you may like it more.
I have the LP and it is not a great pressing, or possibly not a good recording, either way not an audiophile delight.
Hoping for better from the White Stripes in a couple of weeks time.

I think the sound quality of the album is about par for the course, not great but listenable. You do have to crank it up a little though as the dynamics are a little constricted.

Still think he sounds a lot like............

My exact point. Not that they sound the same just the same 'vibe' when they came out followed by a more polished and thought out second album that just didn't catch that same wave.

Mmmmm not sure the 'they are very very young' is a good reason for what is a less impactful album than the first. Cat Stevens was 19 when he wrote Father & Son!!!!
Posted on: 31 May 2007 by woodface
Sorry but Cat Stevens (along with James Taylor) is one of those artists that I can never understand how anyone can like. Father & Son is a mawkish totally awful record so can hardly be used to disprove my argument! You cannot expect a great leap forward from a young band with an ultimately narrow world view in the space of one year. They are great band, it is an excellent record and I am sure in time they will grow further but please give them a chance. Even the Beatles did not make their first really great record (and this is open to debate) until 3-4 releases in. As I said earlier let's just enjoy them while they are here.

love James Taylor, absolutely wonderfully miserable
