Rock Climbing

Posted by: garyi on 15 January 2004

Guys as part of my detirmination to actually do something worthwhile this year my Fiance and I want to go rock climbing.

We have ingratiated ourselves with a small group who have spare harnesses and meet at various indoor and outdoor rocks!

Anyhoo, in order to get started we have purchased some climbing shoes in our relevent shoe sizes as suggested by a rock climbing friend.

Alas although they are the correct size they are crippling both of us, I mean these things are tighter than a ducks arse in water.

Is this to be expected?

Let me clarify, my toes are actully kind of bunched up, a la some sort of 200 year old Chinese torture where I am supposed to be pretty if I have small feet.

If you see where I am coming from does anyone have advise?

Cheers.

BTW I got some Red Chilli ones and Sheila got some Scarpa ones, yes we got them off the web, but they were a great price.

Garyi,

First biking, now climbing! Make up you bloody mind! Big Grin Seriously, shoes should be snug, with no air space at all. I made the mistake of getting shoes that were comfortable for my first shoes. Duh. Two months later, I sold them to a friend for a lot smaller pair. You'll get more stretch if they're unlined -- slippers tend to stretch a lot so at first they're just excruciating. I have two pairs- an all day pair of Aces, and an overhanging crimpy pair of Vectors that actually bend my foot downwards. As a beginner, I'd suggest an all rounder (not sure what "Red Chilli" are like, it's been a while since I've bought shoes). The two pairs I have now are nicely broken in and I just resole them when they're warn.

HTH,

Dan

p.s. I'm assuming you dont wear socks - right?

p.p.s.I havent done this but I hear that if they get too wiffy you can stick them in a zip lock and shove them in the freezer.
