Has football peaked?

Posted by: Chris Dolan on 17 May 2005

I've not posted for a while but I when I looked at the recent topics in the Padded Cell I was very surprised by the dearth of football related discussions.

There are many erudite football followers that have contributed to debate in the past.

Perhaps this has been debated before and I have missed it but I'm intrigued - at the end of a fantastic season for Chelsea, with the prospect of a an FA Cup Final to "end all wars", with the Scousers about to be humiliated by Milan in Istanbul - why no chat?

Is there a footie discussion embargo?

Bit of both if you ask me. Gerrard get his 'the club don't want me' claim in before the club can get their 'the player refuses to sign' line out.

I felt that Mr Owen & Mr Fowler etc are really Liverpool supporters and should have stayed with their team. Ditto Mr Gerrard.

As a Chelsea & football lover, I would love it if everyone who played for Chelsea actually supported them.

Confederation(s) Cup Brazil looked pretty good in most of their UK TVCh5 etc matches recently.

Gerrard signs for West Ham

Now that would be a good move.

Looks like Gerrard's got the move he wanted last year and the club get a nice wedge of money, since all he's cost them is wages as a product of the academy. A good result for both parties but not the fans.

As a fan I'm hopeful that this situation will finally be resolved after a couple of years. At every transfer window it's been will he stay won't he stay. It finally looks like we'll get some decent funds for him and hopefully we can strengthen a bit more now.

Last season he was very off and on he was pants in a lot of games and apparently I've seen over the last few seasons Liverpool have won more points without him in the side than with him in the premiership.

He came up with the goods in the Champs league final but like you say, his form had been pretty erratic for most of the season. This move has been on his mind for the last 12 months. It was 'Carra' who was the real captain of the team this year. Hearing him get that standing ovation during the last game of the season, when he almost scored after running with the ball from his own half, showed that the fans knew who last seasons real hero was.
And who was the player who said they've had no chance of winning the Champs league when he was missing through injury and Bentitez pulled him up about it. It wasn't Carragher, put it that way...

He's changed his mind now.ClickThe saga continues...

Has Gerrard ever done an interview when he didn't look as though he was about to burst into tears?

He's clearly not up to playing abroad with that mentality and the competition for places at Chelsea must be really scary for someone who needs so much love!

Being new to the UK football scene, I've heard that West Ham Utd are good to follow ? or should I just stay with the winners like everybody else ?

Fritz Von The Froggies respect the Yank yellow jersey geezer, but they do not love him, just like Our Michael in F1, innit.

I started to follow my team 40 years ago solely because they were named after (before?) my newly acquired footwear (not Derby boots) - they'd just been promoted in early 1960s . You might choose to follow Wigan.

Mr Gerrard kicked ball in net on Wednesday admirably, but TNS had 1 less shot than I remember Chelsea did in last Anfield visit.

TNS goalie stopped alright.

2nd leg ITV2 next Tuesday. Proper cricket Thursday Ch4 TV.
