Dear John,
I am going to fail to answer you directly, but what about all the records one has owned (or had access to) but which one no longer has. Over thirty years I have had about four times as many records as i now posess, and am currently have a serious examination of the late romantic stuff. I must havre parted with two hundred CDs and LPs in this repertoire in the last three years, and in the intervening time have replaced them with Bach and Haydn.
All the best with your survey though, from Fredrik

Software: 1156 CDs and LPs.
Hardware:7 (four black boxes, LP12 & two speaskers)
Ratio (software devided by hardware) 165.14285
This is to remind us every time we are thinking about an upgrade of how much more music we could get instead.
Regards,
Haim

I used to have 700 LPs. Up until Saturday I had only about 600 CDs.
Now I have access to millions! (Got a NAT 02!)

I think this is dangerous! What if you love a very focussed repertoire and study it very deeply? The result would be less software, but software of significantly more value to you, but which may be relatively limited in number and value compared to the replay set. I am not suggesting that fifty CDs would justify a CDS3, but certainly 200 would...
I think the analogy of Radio Threee is apt. Its audience is tiny, and yet the expenditure is rather large considering. Thank Heavens for an enlightened attitude at the BBC! What?

Point sixty-two (0.62) from your 'extrapability' point of view, but I think my albums are a bit more expensive than the amount you mention.
You should also consider that I'm constantly trying to improve the 'musical value' of my collection. This means that I sell records I no longer like and buy new ones to take their place. This is how I keep my collection stable (well -ish) at 600 LP's. New records cost 20 - 35 euro's.
Regards,
Willem

My ratio is about 8:
£48,000 worth of software, £6,000 worth of hardware (all of it apart from the LP12 and all its bits; and the 21-year-old HB1s; are secondhand)
David Slater would have a quite staggeringly high ratio...

My ratio comes out at around 1.
1500 lps and about 1000 cds vs. several black boxes.
