Mayday SBL tweeter failure help needed URGENT

Posted by: Potiriadis on 02 September 2003

Help, for the love of god help. I have just aquired a pair of passive SBL's. Curious as to why they were not sounding up to par I investigated and found that one of the tweeter pods was silent. Carrying out suitable tests, pswapping crosspvers etc. I have established that the crossovers are fine. I have looked inside the enclusure and the connections to the tweeter are all connected and I have checked all of the plug connectors, is my tweeter faulty??? Do NAIM still make tweeters for the SBL? and are they simple for dealers to fit etc. I was given these as a hand me down so I have no recourse other than to fix them myself. The funny thing is that there is simply no sounf coming from the tweeter at all, not even static.

By the way, any comments regarding the alleged sacrelidge of driving SBL's with a NAIT 3 are expected, but will not be entireley helpful in the current situation.

I dont think you have problem with replacing the blown tweeter. Naim use the same tweeter for their SL2. They probably provide you with one at minimum cost (speaking about customer satisfaction here). Let's see their response on this topic.

Tuan you like to shake things up don't you....anyone who drives a pair of SBL's off a Nait should not have just one tweeter blown, but the speakers taken away by the Naim police Big Grin Razz Razz

Dear hi fi fo fum

Sometimes power isn't everything, and sometimes it cannot be helped when a windfall lands in your lap and its not on the flat earth upgrade path. The Tweeter was blown when I received the SBL's so my Flatcapped Nait was not responsible.

Anyway the trauma is less extreme now. Can any one give rellevant advice on whether a new tweeter can be fitted by myself, a dealer, or does the pod need to go to NAIM.

PS - I'm not tkaing shit from the country that gave us Celine Dion, and David Kid Jensen.

hahaha... I think Naim service is very good (I am not trying to compare it to Bryston), especially Richard Dane is a very nice person. Talking about sensible pricing and best customer service, HiFiFoFum (in Canada) is the very best! Just call Steve and you will see....

I think you should replace both tweeters at the same time, and get your dealer to do it. Replaceing just the blown one will get you up and running, but if one has blown, I suspect the other has had a hard time too! Just take both top boxes to him. He will know how to get the tweets out without causing damage to the surrounding wood veneer.

Best,

Mickey

Just for clarification we use the Scan-Speak D2010 in the SL-2 (the same as in the DBL) and the Scan-Speak D2008 in the SBL.

Agree with this.

I have heard the effect of replacing both tweeters on 5-6 year old SBLs (sounded fine, never been driven really hard), and there was a nice little improvement in the sound quality.

I did the same with my DBLs when I bought them, and again a worthwhile improvement in the sound.

cheers, Martin

I have been contacted by St Dane and I am sending of the tdweeter pods to NAIM this afternoon. Not the cheapest repair I have had done, but as the speakers were free I am not going to complain.

Only problem now is I ahve weeks of position tweeking to do along with re-tuning my REL, oh well musical nirvana just around the corner again.
