Upgrading an LP12

Posted by: John on 13 June 2002

I have an older model LP12 (SN 12711) that has an SME series 3 arm. The current cartridge on it is a Grado which is line level at .4mV. I want to know what my options are in upgrading this unit. My objective would be to take it to a level that brings out the basic LP12 character so I can get a feel for how it is different from my P9. I don't think it makes sense to take this unit to the top level as buying a top flight Naimed or Linn LP12 would cost less.

What is an acceptable level with the LP12 considering my system is 52/Supercap/135's/SBLs and my P9 has an XX2/S Prefix. If a fully loaded LP12 is the only acceptable level in my big system then how much should I upgrade the LP12 if it is being used in my second system downstairs (Kenwood integrated, Prolinear speakers)?

Any help is appreciated.

John,

Are you sure the Grado isn't rated a 4 mv at 3.54 cm/sec? What model is it?

I'd want to make sure the LP12 suspension parts were in good shape and the table is set up to bounce correctly, level, etc.

I think a good Ittok and Karma-level cartridge would give the CDS2 a run for its money.

Phil, thanks for the input. Do you have any idea what a used Ittok sells for? Are there any other arms that work well with the LP12 that aren't as pricy as an ARO?

"Not a P9 fan"???????

By chance did you hear one that had the arm modified? Significant improvement! Much more lush sounding, less compressed, better note decay and flow.

Thanks

[You could try the Origin Live advanced dc motor kit & turntable power supply. Its a vast improvement on the Valhulla and at £262 its not bad value

Yeah, a mod'ed arm may make a diff, but I'm happy with what I have.

Don't know the current price of an Ittok. With an LP12, they seem to be abour $1000. Without...3-500???

I think your goal is to give the CDS2 a run for its money. I suspect that if you get an Ittok AND improve the PSU, you'll surpass the CDS2.
