Dusting off...

Posted by: rousseau on 10 November 2003

After a recent trip back to UK I had a chance to dust off my HiFi for the first time in about 3 years. Most of this kit was bought in '96-98.

Arcam Alpha 7 CD (w/upgrade board to A8)
Naim Nait 3
Rega Ela Speakers

NAC cable (white)
Cobra 2 Interconnect

My memory is a bit hazy on these so I could be a little bit off on the model numbers. It's amazing to hear the sound again. The bass really swings even with gut-wrenching tracks from Transglobal Underground and there is great presence, especially on a couple of my favourite live recordings of Airto Moreira and John McLaughlin. The composure does fall apart if you're tempted to crank up the volume though, and I'm sure that more detail can be dug out of the recordings without compromising the musicality of the existing equipment.

I'd be interested to hear if anyone has compared similar kit to more recent offerings. Shipping the whole lot out to Hong Kong, or just replacing it with a new all-Naim setup is starting to feel quite tempting Smile

Hi Steve,

I'm in the same unfortunate boat as you here, i.e. am in SE Asia (Thailand) and can't get to play my gear too often.

I'm in Europe just now, and there's bargains to be had by the cartload if you live in the UK, but transporting them ...... well you know the story.

As a matter of interest, whats HK like for Linn/Naim dealers ??, there's only one in Thailand and he's crap !!, there's quite a good one in Singapore IIRC.

Anyway, this is not helping you, hope you have fun with your upgrade. I'm looking for speakers and cartridges at the moment.

Cheers
Mike

How about a Naim CDP if you want more detail and a player that can really keep up with "fast" music? Lots of options depnding on whether you want 2nd/hand older kit to mate to the NAIT sound or whether you like a bit of "warmth" added which tends to happen but in a good way with the 5 & reference series (also don't forget the new CD5i as mentioned on the NAIM web site).

I'll definitely check out the CD5 (but its not really clear to me what the difference between the 5 and 5i is). I read a previous posting that someone had picked up a CD5 to replace his Arcam CD and was very happy with it after it had settled down, so I am definitely tempted to try that route.

Thanks for your input!
