Muse HAARP

I've just watched their new live DVD for the first time and I'm completely gob smacked at how good it is. For those who don't know them their music is a beautifully melodramatic flavour of hard rock with some electronics thrown in, and vocals to die for. And they get as heavy as the heaviest when required. This CD/DVD shows it all up in the best possible light. Far too early to call it a classic but a definite possible future contender for one of the best live albums ever. Time will tell and well worth a listen.

Tom,
I went to see them late last year. It was a superb show and it really made me happy to see a lot of teenagers/twentysomethings going crazy over what I would call a real band (made me feel old though). A band that can play their instruments and compose great songs. Muse would not have been out of place amongst some of the greats in the seventies. I see it as a bit of new prog now.
I agree with you it is a superb DVD/album.

Just got the CD / DVD from Music Wow.
CD sounds terrible (the recording / mastering not the playing) to me. The sound was better on their glasto performance from a sky box a few years ago.
Hope the DVD is better.

Out of all the 'new bands' (this is coming from someone was/is into Deep Purple , Led Zeppelin, Nazareth, Boston, UFO, Jimi Hendrix,Bob Seiger and all the rest of the rockers of the 70's & 60's) Muse is one of the rare bands which stand out because of their melodramatic music, passion, extraordinary vocals (bordering on genious and madness), their music is very thrilling by the power of their melodies, the engaging hypnotic mood and their biting and sensual lyrics. They make other 'rock' bands (shite like The Fu')seem pedestrian, unimaginative, work man like and boring.
Yes they do remind me of a progressive rock and I hope they will remain for a long time. This is all thanks to Mark Bellamy the engine behind Muse.

Would this be a good place to start with Muse or would I be better off with one of their studio albums? I have read some reviews of their work and think it might be for me - who, if anyone, would you compare them to?

Muse - really great music, sadly all the recordings seem to be rubbish.
HAARP is mainly from Black Holes and Revelations, so not that representative of everything.
However, if you prefer the vibe of live music, get HAARP and the previous live recording Hullaballoo.

Hi Mark
As a starter I would try Absolution which is the LP before the latest. It's my personal favourite but all the albums are very good.
HAARP played in the car on a dark country road very loud is amazing!

Thanks James/Jay,
Had a quick look on Amazon and their albums are only a fiver each so not much to lose there!

Absolution and Black Holes are both excellent and you cannot lose at that price.
Having played the new live album in the car loudly the other day I have to say the musicianship is fabulous. The quality of the recording is not that good and it can be hard to distinguish instruments and vocals. Shame. I found the DVD better.
