New music needed
Posted by: Bruce Woodhouse on 26 January 2004
It is the end of the month and 2004 has started with a whimper, the only new CDs bought so far are two OST's.
Before the new Lamchop albums are released can somebody recommend me something fresh? Mainstream tastes generally, not dance music or The Darkness please. I've got these CD tokens and nothing to buy!
Recent purchases include some of Handsome Family and Willard Grant back catalogue, Kate Rusby, Damien Rice, British Sea Power

I've got an order in for these, which I'm eagerly anticipating:
-=> Mike Hanson <=-
- Mary Margaret O'Hara - Miss America
- The Sea and Cake - The Sea and Cake
- James Yorkston and the Athletes - Moving up Country
- Jayhawks - Hollywood Town Hall
- Yo La Tengo - Summer Sun
- Rickie Lee Jones - Evening of My Best Day
- Wheat - Per Second, Per Second, Per Second... Every Second

IMHO The Wheat album sucks big time -- much better is their previous effort "Hope & Adams".
My tips would be Po' Girl album which is a very mainstream (as in accessible) alt.folk/Americana gem and Cafe Tacuba's "Cuartro Caminos" (who are the Mexican Radiohead although don't let that put put you off -- it's mainstream enough that my Mum likes it).

The Mexican tip looks a good one.
I have the James Yorkston (I think I actually introduced it to the forum) but Sea and the Cake is a new one on me.

I can strongly reinforce some of Mike Hansons' suggestions. The Mary Margaret O'Hara album is quite remarkable (albeit an acquired taste). Are you aware of the 'Apartment Hunting' soundtrack? Available from Maple Music in Canada. Sounds unfinished and cheaply recorded but bits of it match Miss America and it's all that's out there bar her work with The Gourds and her Christmas EP. All worth a search.
Anything by The Jayhawks is excellent bar the last one, which was a profound disappointment.
May I also point you in the direction of Josh Rouse - 1972 and Shelby Lynne - Identity Crisis. Both excellent and very under-rated.
Ever tried any Patty Griffin? If you like acoustic then try Living With Ghosts or 1,000 Kisses. If you like to rock out then try Flaming Red. All great in their own way.
Happy listening.

If you like mainstream, then try Lisa Marie Presley's album To Whom it May Concern.

This is what the Music Room is for. Thanks folks.
I have a big African collection but have added very little lately. Anything new and interesting?

Bruce, if you don't yet have Rickie Lee Jones' The Evening Of My Best Day as Mike suggested above, it's a required masterpiece.

Try:
FOURTET - Rounds (unusual mix of electronic instrumentals)
ERYKAH BADU - Mama's Gun (pure soul/r&b heaven with beautiful vocals)
GOLDFRAPP - Black Cherry (kind of glam rock with punk-electro overtones)

I would get it, except that it's rather scarce around here. I'll start with their latest (which still received a good review from AMG), and then try to hunt down their previous offerings.

I've already got their later album, One Bedroom, which is fantastic! If you like that, also check out Tahiti 80, particularly their last album, Wallpaper For The Soul.
Regarding African music, I'm not sure what you like. I've really enjoyed New Ancient Strings, a collection of kora duets from Toumani Diabate and Ballake Sissoko. I originally learned about Diabate's kora virtuosity hearing his work with Taj Mahal on the heartily recommended Kulanjan, which is a very cool hybrid of West African and Delta Blues.

Thanks Mike.
I have those, New Ancient Strings is a rather remarkable record I think. Did you notice the insert-how it was recorded through the night in the the Mali parliament house as this was the only building in the country with a suitable acoustic! Conjures a great image when you are listening. I have two othes by Ballake Sissoko and neither comes close really. Kulanjan is OK but the Ry Cooder/Ali Farke Toure collaboration 'Talking Timbuktu' is a bit special. Last African disc I bought was Wanita by Rokia Traore, great in places. Anyone heard the follow up?
