A/V amp volume level

Hi everyone,
I've recently had to down-size from DVD5/AV2, Naim amps etc. to a Sony A/V receiver and Jamo speakers, due to an impending house move. I've found that to get a decently high replay level the volume on the amp needs to be wound up to near maximum (ie. about -10dB on the volume scale). This isn't an amplifier power / speaker sensitivity issue, so can anyone comment on the possible reasons for it? What do other people find with similar set-ups? I must admit that with the DVD5/AV2 the volume needed to be set well into the low seventies in order to get a decent sound level and to make dialogue easily audible. This I thought seemed rather high. Is this a perculiarity with all A/V kit - or is the sound level on DVD's recorded very low? All comments and thoughts most welcome, thanks.
