Defect on "Night Train" CD?
Posted by: PTH on 15 July 2006
My apologies if this is a dumb question, but I just bought the Oscar Peterson Trio 20-bit remastered "Night Train" CD and I'm wondering if my copy is defective. At about 1:52 into track 8 ("Things Ain't What They Used to Be") there is a loud popping sound in the left channel. This happens every time I play the track. I can see no mark on the surface of the CD. Is my copy unique, or have others noticed this too? (I bought the last copy in the store, so I can't ask them to compare it with another one.) Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum.
Well, I've never noticed it on my copy (though I can't check right now as I'm away from home - and given mine is the verve master edition one, I'm not sure it's the same one you have anyway).
I did once by a CD that suffered from this (a wonderful performance on the Enigma variations along with the far finer serenade for strings but there was such a flaw in nimrod). After returning it twice I gave up, e-mailed the company to point out the whole batch must be flawed. They wrote back to say they knew to which I was very tempted to ask why the ****dy ***l they hadn't returned them all to the manufacturer and why they were still selling them! So, in essence, what I'm suggesting is that you return it to the store, get a replacement and see if that also suffers.

Just given the offending track a spin at a good volume and yes I have the same pop. Replayed it several times and I reckon it is part of the music, not a CD defect.

Thanks, folks, for checking this out so quickly for me. I feel better now. (I guess.) In any event, what a great bunch of people!

Peter,
Sorry for late reply, but I've just got round to checking both my CD and vinyl copies.
Agreed there is a pop there, but I'm sure it is a drum.
There are a number of other pops and clicks on my vinyl copy, and dreadful scratch as a result of a fight with one of my brothers when we were about 15 and 14, oh happy days! Unscratched side playing now.
Regards
Nic
