Which route?

I am currently using a CD5+HiCap and am very happy with the combo. My speakers were replaced in Feb. with some Neat Elites which are now just about run-in/opening up.They are a truly excellent speaker.I know i should have bought my amplification before my speakers, but could no longer put up with my TDL RTL3s booming in my lounge. So - with my last £1500 i intend to go probably for second hand Pre and Power, and some NACA5.
Should i go for a 72+250 or 102+napsc+180.
My listening room is 3m by 4.5.
Any advise would be great.
Cheers.Ceri

That's easy, a 72+250 won't work without a *cap!

I presume you've laid the 'bass-boom' demon to rest with the Neats?
Bear in mind that the 180 has a leaner sound. A 250 can be a bit 'fruity' if a bass XS problem exists. It isn't automatically better.
I run Linn Saras off a 160 and know that a 250 would make them bass heavy (in my room).

Ceri,
as Bas already mentioned, 250s are unable to supply power to a preamp; you'll need a *cap.
What amp are you using now?
Will an old style 32.5/hi/250 come in at <1500ukp?
In any event, welcome to the Neat Army. What finish did you get?

Thanks for the info chaps.Current amplification is a 7 year old Audiolab 8000A - reasonably clean sound, but not exactly engaging.Due to the smallish room and nearly always late listening, huge power is not a priority.Perhaps the 180, without the need for a *cap would be ample power. Is the difference between 102 and a 72 that great?
Mike - my Elites are in maple,to suit the wood flooring and furniture(and to keep the other half happy!)I wont be needing an upgrade for quite a few years!!
Thanks for the info.

I find a 72/hicap better than a 102/NAPSC. I find the 72/hicap better value for money than a 102/NAPSC/hicap - but if I were buying new, that would be a hard choice, since I like RC very much, too.
I replaced a 140 with a 250, and I think the 250 is terrific. I'd MUCH rather have a 72/hicap 250 than a 102/180, but then it SHOULD be better because it costs more.
Best to listen for yourself.

Mike
32.5 (<£200); new style HiCap (<£450); new style 250 (<£900). For £1500 should be possible to get the three in the UK.
