Hi Red
Where to start?
That wonderful guitar style can be heard in embryonic form in Fairport Convention of course.
The latest album 'The Old Kit Bag' displays continuing great form, with lyrical wit and distinctive guitar playing.
An excellent taster that spans the years is the 1993 Rykodisc triple CD set 'Watching The Dark' but may be difficult to get hold of now?
More recently; 'You? Me? Us?' from 1996 is a 2 CD electric/acoustic offering with some great songs.
1982's 'Shoot Out The Lights' is the best collaboration with his (then) wife, Linda.
My all time favourite is probably 'Rumor (sic) and Sigh' from 1991; despite the production being f***ed up by Mitchell Froom.
Enjoy.

He did many excellent LP's with his ex. 'I want to see the Bright Lights Tonight' is superb.

Second or third Bright Lights. I have Amnesia on vinyl which is good. Even going back to Fairport Convention days they are worth hearing.

I definitely agree with 'I want to see the Bright Lights Tonight'.
'Hand of Kindness'is another good solo album.
The most frustrating thing about this great artist is getting hold of most of those excellent LP's done with Linda (between 'Bright Lights' and 'Shoot Out The Lights', including 'Pour Down Like Silver' and 'Hokey Pokey'.
Has anybody any idea why these have never had a decent release on CD in the UK?

Redeye,
My advice would be get his latest album 'the old kit bag' and then move straight onto the Richard and Linda Thompson albums.
I want to see the Bright Lights is absolutely essential. If you've not heard 'calvary cross' purchase immediately!
Shoot out the Lights is also fab but whatever you do don't miss 'Pour Down Like Silver'. This is my favourite Richard and Linda Thompson album and is absolute class. Unfortunately it's very difficult to find on CD now.
cheers

Agree on the music, can't agree about the production. I would say that this is an excellent recording, in that it get's better with better equipment. With not-so-hot equipment it sounds bad, though.
