Nait 2 phono campatible with high output M/C?

Posted by: KENB on 10 November 2001

I am looking for a new cartridge and am considering Benz silver or dynavector 10X4 high output moving coils but I don't think there is enough gain in the Nait 2 MM phone section. Also considered clear audio Aurum Alpha or Beta MM. My current Rega Bias is 8 years old and I never really intended on using it this long. I need to run a t 12:00 oclock now for moderate volume. Maybe the Amp has a problem?
System is 1988 Nait 2 (owned since new) Rega P3 and Bias. Meadowlark Kestrel Hop rods (awsome with Nait)Original Rega Planet. Biwired with NAc a5 and a custom NOrdost flat wire interconnect (amazing speed and detail)

Thanks Ken

The high output MCs (2 mv+) are designed to work into MM boards. They'll overload most MC boards, although I ran a 4.5 mv Grado through Ks for a day without significant problems (the MM boards were better).

Hi Ken,

A 12:00 setting on the Nait 2 for a moderate volume setting isn't far OTT, especially if your loudspeakers are of average sensitivity(?). ISTR that the Bias has slightly lower o/p level than the other Rega cartridges. I will be trying Rega Planar 3 with Elys soon, and will report back with my findings wrt volume setting.

Regarding the use of high output MCs with the Nait. I asked this same question on the old forum some years ago, and Julian V. commented that a high output MC, such as the DV10x4, would present impedance mismatch problems (IIRC) that would outweigh other perceived negative effects like lower than average o/p level. JV went on to say that a good MM was best into the Naits.

I was looking to replace my K9 (Axis/Basik Plus) at the time, and as I couldn't dem a 10x4, or similar, before committing, I left it alone. Interestingly, my major complaints with the Axis/Basik Plus/K9 (indistinct bass and an occasionally ragged top end) completely vanished when I upgraded my loudspeakers from (gulp!) ported, metal domed, B&Ws to IBLs.

no more holes in our arse

PS. If you do decide go for a high output MC, then please report back with your experiences.
