HiCap

Posted by: Richard P on 30 November 2001

While recently reassembling my system, I found that my HiCap says that the 4-pin cable to the 250 should be in socket 2. However, my 82 manual says socket 3. My HiCap is about 10 years old. Which is right, or are the both the same?

My old HiCap (S/N: 17xxx) labels socket 3 as output to the NAXO2-4; it looks like sockets 1 & 2 are the same, audio only without power, and socket 3 includes a +ve rail connection.

However, my (recently serviced) NAXO2-4 has a 5-pin DIN as an input so the only option is socket 4 on the HiCap. Seems to work fine like that , I hope I'm not doing anything deleterious to the sound quality.

Richard,

this question has been asked several times before, so you're not the only one confused.

Believe the wiring instructions on the back of the HiCap.

In the intervening years Naim have changed the config of the sockets (I think one of the 4-pin sockets used to carry power but new ones don't have that).

Why this can't be mentioned in the manuals is beyond me.

I had the same problem and found that the sockets differed in sound quality so my advice is to experiment with both.

(Richard will be OK here since he has a NAP250).

On all HiCaps that I've ever seen there was one five-pin socket and three four-pin ones.

On a modern unit the five-pin is designed to power equipment. The others are just for carrying signals.

I believe that socket 3 on old HiCaps was a four-pin which carried power to 32's & 42's & NAXO2's & 3's (i.e. not the .5, -4 or -6 variants).

Bear in mind that power amps below the 250 have a power supply rail to feed a preamp. If you connect one of these to an old HiCap socket 3 then I understand you can blow the HiCap regs, or something in the power amp PS.
