First Track with New Equipment

Posted by: NeilM on 17 June 2002

Hello all,

I have read many posts on the forum for a month or two now. All very intersting. But been scratching my head trying to think of something that might create a useful thread and be of use to me in the future. Whilst driving around Tuscany last week, I had this idea so giving it a shot now. I'm sure I'll find out soon enough if this is any good or not .............

So, you've rushed back home from the dealer / dodgy dealer (etc etc) with your new equipment. Plugged in / installed as necessary. What is the first piece of music you play (and why optionally)?

For Starters;

Massive Attack
Angel - track 1 from Mezzanine.
on CD

Why?

Looking for improved presence of the vocals
Better Separation and spacing of the instruments
and improved Bass depth and control

Essentially, do I get a more musical presentation than previously, am I being drawn more deeply into the track than before?

I thank you all....

Hi,

I use planet Clair by the B52s cracking track with a lot going on and some great dynamic bits.

If the audition, at the dealers or at home, does not do it with my favourite tracks, then the question you ask does not apply - I don't buy the gear.

cheers

Hi,
As with a lot of things, it depends on mood but I rate Angel very highly (on vinyl) for new TT purchases or tweaks, along with September Song by Art Pepper (a good jazz all-rounder) or Sad Old Red by Simply Red (and absolutely nothing else by them, I hasten to add.

For CD listening to upset the neighbours, it's currently a toss up between Shake Hands With Beef (!) by Primus or Dr. Buck's Letter by The Fall.

Regards,
Ed.

'Chalet Lines' by Belle and Sebastian is the one I use. Breathtaking!

Ennio Morricone, On Earth as It Is in Heaven, from 'The Mission' OST - jaw dropingly beautiful, powerful and a bit of a handful to reproduce.

I'm still a slave to torch singers - her early work on vinyl is terrific. From my experience, a solitary female vocalist accompanied by a bass is a good test.
