A fine weekend of community spirit

I just wanted to report on a most unexpectedly enjoyable weekend spent in humble Northampton.
On Saturday, it was the Northampton Carnival. Now, whilst I have never expected Rio or New Orleans to come to Northampton, I have to say that previous events have been a bit sad-looking. However, this year's was fanastic. A wonderful array of floats from all the different community groups in the town with fantastic costumes. The main event took part in Delapre Park with music from local bands of all types and Afro-Caribbean and Indian food (in addition to the obligitory burger van!) available. It has to be said the carnival would have been nothing without the ethnic minorities involvement. There was a fantastic atmosphere all weekend without a jot of trouble that I could see; a timely two fingers to the BNP.
To top the weekend off, the following day in the Market Square had some great local bands. I was particularly charmed by 'My First Tooth'. There was also a pretty good covers band called The Strides with a Paul Weller lookalike that made Nirvana sound like Booker T and the MGs and the headline act was the full Blockheads band (minus Ian Dury of course!) who did a storming set.
