The Olympics 2008

Got to hand it to the Chinese, that was one hell of a show. London has a hard act to follow. Roll on the sport.

Now that is a cheap way to start a fight!

How does the Parlee ride Bruce? Is it comfortable? I rather fancy one, but I'm also looking at Serotta and Storck. I don't race any more, just quick(ish) day rides, up to 100m with plenty of hills.

Reg.

Mail me on bwoodhouse@totalise.co.uk and when I get a bit more time I'll give you some thoughts. I started out looking at Serotta too. I don't regret the Parlee at all.

More medals today in the cycling and sailing, turning into a habit. Only real cynics would fail to enjoy the success that Team GB are having.

Well done to all involved, clearly a lot of hard work and sacrifice is paying off, along with a little financial backing.

Been following the Games since Moscow. Can't recall GB doing this well this early.

The UK Government must be taking 2012 VERY seriously NOW ! Yes I am as green eyed as, Christ you guys smashed the Aussies in the velodrome.

Nic,

You should see some of the vitriol being posted around the net re cycling.
'NO WAY are they not juiced', 'what they did is just not possible without drugs' etc.
Some people just can't comprehend concepts like single-minded dedication and sheer bloody hard work.
I feel sorry for those people. Life must be remarkably joyless.

The GB cycling team are addicted to drugs called hard work, professionalism, team spirit and meticulous preparation. They have a culture of competition, and of winning.

Good luck to 'em!

Paraguayan heartthrob breaks our collective hearts

By Chris Chase

Leryn Franco is just your run-of-the-mill javelin thrower/pageant queen/model with her own calendar. But during the Beijing Olympics the 26-year old Paraguayan became so much more to the American people; she became our javelin thrower/pageant queen/model with her own calendar. So, my fellow Americans, it is with a heavy heart that I regret to inform you that our favorite Paraguayan athlete (sorry Jose Luis Chilavert) was eliminated from the Olympics this morning after failing to qualify for the javelin finals. Take all the time you need.
Ms. Franco became the object of our attention after she was noticed by NBC cameras during the Parade of Nations at the Olympic Opening Ceremony. Fourth-Place Medal's fledgling Investigative Unit discovered her identity eight magical days ago and since then our schoolboy crush blossomed into unrequited love.
Leryn -- can we call you Leryn? -- didn't return our collective calls, but we didn't mind. We knew she was busy preparing for her event: the javelin throw. She competed this morning, finishing second-to-last in the qualifying round with a throw that was 12 meters short of her personal best. It was a disappointment, to be sure, but not altogether surprising. After all, Leryn's goal was never to medal; it was to win the hearts of men and women worldwide. And in that event, Leryn Franco won gold.

"Australian 'Sour grapes' at GB success"

I was pleased for Tasha Danvers. She has had a rough ride to the Games but did herself proud today.

Since I've lived here (March 1996) the Olympics have held little interest for me since the commercial tv channels (currently Channel 7) that have the rights to show them are unwatchable. They are so parochial that even Australians have had enough. The Australian newspapers web site had a poll where 47% said the coverage was Terrible and 35% Bad with 14% Average. It's even come out that in order to attract the non-sports fan they have scripted some of the commentary to appear as if it's being done by a dumb blond.

This year has been a bit different though since there has been complimentary coverage on SBS which is much more world wide in it's outlook For example it shows the Tour de France live each night and usually shows the football World Cup in it's entirety (I just wish they could afford F1 and then I wouldn't have to watch any commercial channel).

Anyway things got off to a good start with the cycling road races and time trials but have since gone a bit downhill with endless water polo, handball, volleyball (beach & indoor). Of course while all this has been going on CH7, last night, showed not the classic football between Brazil and Argentina (unless it was after I'd given up and gone to bed) but possibly the dullest (spectator) sport on earth zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzsoftball.

To reply to the BBC's piece on sour grapes I've not really encountered it amongst the guys I work with - there have been a few jokey comments but mostly some bewildered (almost) respect. Well maybe not quite respect but even I scoffed when the UK minister for sport claimed they'd do better than Australia in the week leading up to the games - so to see it happen has been, I must admit, quietly satisfying. Hope they can keep it up for London 2012.

Cheers
Scott

Fantastic, thanks James. We got home early this morning. I'll post some piccies of the trullo we stayed in later. Plenty of the red stuff consumed and, of course as you suggested, the wonderful green stuff!
