Which Beatles Box?

Posted by: David Scott on 21 February 2010

Dear All,

I'm thinking about getting one of the Beatles remastered boxes and wondering if it should be the stereo or the mono one.

I'm inclined towards the mono as;
Any thoughts?

Thanks,

David

Thanks Stu,

Do you think I'm right in thinking this box will be the only chance to get the mono cd's?

David, EMI claim so, but who knows?

The mono set is pressed in Japan, wonderfully packaged in miniature replica sleeves, and is overall a nicer product than the EU-produced stereo discs.

Thanks Graham.

I've looked at the pictures and it does look very nice.

I have the stereo box, what can I say, it's fab.

Of course you can, but that won't do anything to reproduce the greater immediacy that the mono mixes have over the stereo versions.

Geoff Emerick and Ken Scott, both recording and mixing engineers for much of The Beatles' work, confirm that the mono mixes were considered definitive, and that The Beatles themselves were relatively uninterested in the stereo mixes, not even attending those mixing sessions. Stereo was seen as a novelty market until The Beatles (the white album), which they mixed in both mono and stereo, intentionally different mixes. Let It Be and Abbey Road were mixed only in stereo.

When my piggy bank gets full I'll buy the mono set, and then selected individual stereo CDs.

All best,
Fred

Folks,
any news about the release of the mono box set in vinyl?

Thanks

I was one of the fans/idiots who bought both.

The mono set is great and the quality of the artwork is so much better. On the other hand, the stereo set is worth having but they can be bought individually so I would go with munch's advice

DJ, as did I.

I think that we can describe ourselves as "fans", given that the word is derived from fanatic.

Of course, our actions may be seen by others as "idiotic"!

Give it a couple of years and the mono's will be available individually. I remember back in the mid-late 70's buying the vinyl box set that came with a "Rarities" LP, "available only with the box set".
Within 12 months the Rarities LP was on sale on its own.

Remember - EMI need the money Winker

This gets down to lumpers and splitters from my botanical days. One family of plants would suddenly become 3 different families because some scientists did microscopic analysis to divide them up.

I'm a lumper, I just put em on and enjoy em, others have to have every last detail perfect. That's not me. I"m sure the mono set is fantastic.

I really like the 2 CD set of singles, sure takes you thru the whole range lickety split.

get the usb stick -- it has 24-bit flac format files on it straight from abbey road.
Posted on: 25 February 2010 by Tarquin Maynard - Portly
Please expand on that, Jon.

If Jon expands the FLAC, they'll become 24 bit WAV Eek

Sorry, I meant to ask why it should be done - the implication being its a better sound?

I've not heard the stick version - do you get mono and stereo mixes?
Posted on: 26 February 2010 by graham55
Stereo only, I believe.

Be careful lads there are a lot of Mono box forgeries out there. Ebay seems to be flooded with them. Have a look at this youtube link.
