252 about to arrive - What to play first?
Posted by: GraemeH on 27 January 2010
A replacement for my 52 is due to be hooked up today.
Anyone suggest what to christen it with that might reveal its character best relative to the 52 and I'll report back?
Bit of fun really....Thanks
Graeme

I've always found that a good way of appraising a new component is to play an album that I really like to see if the new kit further enhances my enjoyment and also to play an album that is sitting on the shelf filed under 'Why ever did I buy that' to see if I still feel the same way about it!

Well, I'd have gone for Jeff Buckley's 'Grace', but by the same token I'd never change my lovely 52 for a 252!
Let us know how you get on.

Oh to have a 52 to update!
Enjoy Graeme, but of course your system now doesn't match now unless the 135s are CBs.

I suggest Holiday in Cambodia, by The Dead Kennedys.

And how did it sound?

It's warming up nicely since Wednesday evening. It arrived very cold and literally had to thaw for a few hours before switch-on. Played half of BVSC and had to go out on business so no conclusions from that. Busy yesterday BUT just now put on the MFSL pressing of 'Dark Side OTM' and it's sounding very impressive indeed. Very controlled and beautifully textured.
CDS3 arrives on Tuesday which will complete my transition to a 'hybrid' Black-Olive.
Best

As a matter of interest, Graeme, why did you go from a 52 and CDSII to a 252 and CDS3? Were you dissatisfied with the sound and what changes/improvements are you expecting for what must have been quite a big financial hit?
Just interested, as I have much the same system as you had before you made your recent changes.

Both the 252 & CDS3 were aquired very reasonably S/H although they are only a few years old. When you factor in the cost of servicing and upgrading my old 52 and servicing the CDS2 in the near future it is a worthwhile move to me to put the money into the newer products.
It's probably been around £800 all in and I'll be happy for the next 10 years.
