Dac and HD light when can I expect to see it?
Posted by: nitrous on 16 March 2010
Hello All, I'm wondering if anyone is using FLAC download of new Gabriel Album and can help with this?
I have had my NDAC for about 5 weeks now (very nice too) but only just started playing with memory sticks. I didn't have any 'hi res' music so I downloaded FLAC 24 from 'Music Society' bit of Bowers Wilkins site.
I then had to convert files to Wav. Did this using B&W recommended Mac flac as I'm an apple user.
Plugged in to DAC and plays fine, sounds pretty good, but not better than 5XS through DAC I would say. But shouldn't the 'HD' light come on as I thought these files were 24/96?
I can't find on the website exact spec of files it just says 24 bit.
Cheers

The files are 24/48, so don't qualify as 'HD' as far as the DAC is concerned. The sample rate has to be higher than 48kHz to get the LED to light up.
I'm playing it directly from FLAC through the HDX and it sounds excellent, although I've not compared to the CD rip (life's too short)
Cheers

...which is strange. 24 bit means much more to my ears than 96k. I cannot hear the diff between 24-48 and 24-96. But HUGE differences between 16/44 and 24/44.

Hi Nico, just had the same problem when I was playing 24/96 files. Click on Hard Drive then Applications then Utilities then Audio MIDI. Under properties you have to set the relevant info eg 24/48 or 24/96 TWICE. Once you've done the "built in input" change the drop down to "built in output" and do it again. Naim support gave me this info - they were very patient and helpful. Some say you should change the resolution each time you play a different type of file, can't really comment as it's still early days for me.

the Gabriel files are 24-44. I have them. Very nice.

Hello,
I have also downloaded said album this evening with a view to playing this via Logitech Transporter. When pressing play DAC light goes off, but Transporter remote suggests that track is playing, and yet I hear no audio.
It says it is FLAC. Sample size 24 bits, sample rate 48.0kHz & bitrate 1471kbps VBR.
Any help guys?

Mine are 24/48. While you were on the B&W site, did you download anything else? The Gwyneth Herbert is not bad...

You should be able to hear a difference between 44/48 and 96 and 192k - depends what kit you are using. May I suggest next time you are demming kit you look for something on which you can hear a difference?
I do, however, agree that the jump from 16 to 24 bits is the most obvious difference.

There was a thread on the Slim Devices forum about the TP corrupting certain hi def flac files. The issue was that they were encoded using high (>5) flac compression levels and the TP could not decode properly in real time. The solution was to re-encode using a lower compression level and everything worked. Not exactly the same issue, but worth a try.

Thanks to everyone for input and clarification of files as 24/48 and thus reason HD light doesn't come on.
With regard to what I'm hearing, it's a bit difficult to be catagoric about quality when you are using a recording that you haven't heard before. I prefer to assess upgrades with music I know well. So i'm not saying I don't hear an improvement, I just wasn't blown away. Having said that I'm blown away as a whole with the DAC as I never used to listen to CD's much, but since I got the 5XS/DAC the LP12 has been having a rest!
Not sure how this could help me, for a start I don't get any other options in the 'drop down' apart from 16/44 but I will keep this in mind as I start to look at steaming music from the Mac. Off to get an Airport Express on Friday to have a play with that as well.
Cheers for answers

Dave, I'm assuming the problem reported and the one Dusty is experiencing is possibly because the TP is trying (and failing) to read the data 'on the fly'
If you follow the B&W web link to the MAX conversion software there are tons of different output types. I tried the 24 bit WAV Linear PCM 'little endian float' so I assume it has done this, it does play ok. But I have no idea what 'little endian float'is
Dusty perhaps using the MAX software would help you?

So much for decoding being the same overall regardless of compression level.quote:Originally posted by DaveBk:quote:Originally posted by Dustysox:

Either a bug in the TP firmware or simply the case that the TP does not have enough processing horsepower to cope. I use 24/96 flac at level 5 and have never had an issue.

I dont "dem" kit. I buy the best Naim I can afford
And maybe you can point me in the direction of kit that will showcase the differences? Do I require a 252/300 or something to hear it? If so, that doesn't have much relevance to the greater world. Not many can afford that.
And if a 202/200 is not good enough in your eyes to resolve this, I will never know the joy of 24-192 i suppose.
In listening to different hi-res options through a nice headphone preamp(unknown) and some sweet wood Grados, I could not discern a meaningful difference between the EXACT same files in 24/48 vs 24/96.
I did not try 192.
These vinyl rips done on nice gear by people who know what they are doing.
Maybe you will tell me if they were WAVs I would have been able to hear a difference.
Regardless.... in getting a chance to hear the Beatles USB stick in 24-48, I am not feeling that 96k would bring much more to the party.
It makes me reconsider 24/96 for vinyl transfers.

How do I re encode using a lower compression?

Hi Nico,
Isn't the MAX software for MAC's? Or have I misread?
I am using AVA RS3, Logitech Transporter going in to Naim DAC. Squeezebox Sever vers 7.4.3 -r30264. Transporter firmware vers 80.
Is this all correct?

Hi Dusty
Use dbPowerAmp Music Converter on PC or XLD on Mac, and just convert from flac to flac, only select a lower compression number in the dropbox for Compression Level.
It will reencode using the lower compression.

Is dbPoweramp music converter a pay software as the free one I downloaded I can't see where I change compression level.

I use the paid version but AFAIK the free one should also convert flac.
If you start the Converter
1. you select the flac file you wish to convert.
2. In the next screen you select in the drop box Convert to "flac"
3. Next you can select below the previous drop-box in antoher drop-box the compression level
4. press button next.
That's how it should work.

Might not be your cup of tea, but if you want to see it light up, try this FREE 24/96 download.

Hi Chaps,
Still no joy. Using Music Coverter and varying compression still nothing.
One thing I have noticed is that the sync light on DAC goes off?? I am then unable to play any music format through Transporter. I have to run through Transporter set up (wireless/IP etc) and then sync light comes back on and normal service is resummed.
I am at a loss (less!!!) as to what to do. Any thoughts on sync light switching off?

On my DAC the sync-light always goes off for a split second when a new file is being played. I guess it syncs with the new signal then.
Yours staying off would suggest two possible causes to me.
1. there is no signal coming through to the DAC. So check:
a. your cables between Transporter and DAC.
b. your network connection between Transporter and storage.
2. The signal received from Transporter is not on one of the standard sampling frequencies. Given the quality of the Transporter I can hardly imagine that being the case.
On the other hand you having to go through the network setup of the Transporter, I would think there is some problem with maintaining network connections between Transporter and storage. So that would be my first guess to start sorting things out (not the easiest part though).
Hope this helps a bit.
