Maplins dind incompatible?

In connecting up my mac this weekend to the stereo I got some leads from maplins.
I got a four phono to 5 pin din as I need in and out for the mac.
Well one of the channels dosn't work, is this a dodgy lead or is it configured differently? Luckily I had a four phono Cord.co one and it works fine.
